Looking for some advise from guys who have swapped gears in their trucks as to which route I should go for my 07 6.0. First of all the Truck is studded heads are o-ringed all the reg bulletproofing done. Truck has a stage 2 Barder, Absolute Apex Manifold, Mishimoto Intercooler, Precision Industries 1600 Converter, Billet Input Shaft and will be going with 175/30 injectors. I have a 4" Carli lift and 37' Toyo Mt's. I have sat and done all the math. The truck stock came with 3.73's and the 285/75/18 right at a 31" tire. If I go 4.56's the truck will be geared just slightly lower than stock turning approx 100 RPMS higher at highway speeds 55+. If I go with 4.10's the truck will be geared higher than stock and will be turning approx 200 RPM's lower at 55+. I am thinking 4.30's may be the perfect match as I may drop down to 35's for towing purposes when wanting to use the truck as a truck and not a grocery getter.

It is not a race truck I do not drag it I do not hot rod all around town it is the funnest daily driver I have to enjoy and use as a truck. I am putting in Trutrac's front and rear and this may be the easiest deciding factor the gear range split for them is 4.10 and higher or 4.56 and lower. Can anyone definitively advise me if the 4.30's will work with the 4.56 and lower carrier?

Any real world experience/insight is greatly appreciated I am trying to get this done and dusted before I come home in July to put the truck to work and use it for the month. Thanks guys for your help, I am hoping I may be able to come to a definitive decision on which way to go and get this into the shop.

Thanks,

Nick

I'd go 4.10. You're going to be making enough power to not need a 4.56 imo and a 4.10 will be much more forgiving if you do decide to bring the truck down to 35s. 35s and 4.56s on the highway wouldn't be much fun.

My intentions are to get this back to stock as much as possible for towing and everyday driving. Am I missing something drastic here? As by my figures the 4.56's would be like driving a brand new one with 3.73's and the original tires just as my truck came. I am really leaning to the 4.30's to bridge the gap I think.

I'll be putting 40's on my truck my gears are 373 I think I'm gonna go with 4.10's

I think 4.30's would be a good match. Just a little higher than stock gearing so it runs out better on the highway. 37's and 4.10s is not a bad combo either, I've run that and it drives very nice.

What's your driving style like? I like to run 70mph on the highway so I try and gear my trucks so they run just under 2000rpms at 70mph. 4.56 and 37's would probably work well for you if you drive like me.

I can't stand a truck that's geared too high. They lose power, never shift right, and they always hunt between gears when towing.

Exactly!! I am beyond the age where I need to get where I am going an hr earlier by driving 90 mph's. I like to run 70-75 on the interstate 80 tops. Everyone gears for the highway I understand it is beneficial but 95% of our driving is in town. I do not drive across the country every other week. I am not a light to light racer and don't need to flock the mustang that pulls up next to me. I am thinking 4.30's would be a perfect compromise. I just don't see the significance of spending 2k for gears front and back to only go to 4.10's. By math on rpm calculators using those gears and the 5r110 gear ratio's the rpm range is truly minimal diff of +/- 100-200 rpms depending on the gear set 4.10's obviously higher (gear wise) and the 4.56's on the lower end (gear wise) of the spectrum.

So what would be a good gear choice for 40's?

I have 37's and 4.56 gears . Daily and towing the truck cannot tell the difference between stock and now . On the highway at 80 it runs 2100 rpm and still gets 15 mpg. I went from a 40 to a 38 and then to a 37 and the 37's are a great match for them .

Strokin best I can say is start playing with the gear calculators. There are calculators where you can put in tire size axle ratio and then transmission ratio. I did that to figure up my rpms on a stock factory truck and then played with it to get gears that matched it almost perfectly with the 37's. With 40's I would be looking to start in the 4.88 or maybe even 5.13 range. and see what figures those toss you.

Are these gear calculators on the Internet?

Florida thank you for the reply. That is what I am looking for someone who has actually run those gears and can comment on it. I am very torn betw. the two one day i decide 4.56's then the next I think 4.30's haha. I was hoping that would take it to right back to stock as that is how these trucks were built to perform so as close as possible I can get it the best I feel I am.
