I know there isn't really much of a difference in running 4" vs. 5" other than tone, but what about when a muffler is thrown in there? My truck currently has a 4" strait pipe all the way to the back of the truck. Either way, I'm going to add a muffler and resonator to my truck. I was wondering it was worth it to upgrade to a 5" system at the same time. I'm thinking no, but I don't have any real facts or experience to back that up.

FTE makes a 5" resonator fwiw. From what I've read, 5" will have a lot more drone. I would sugest sticking with the 4".

Are there any mufflers that are noticeably better than others? I'm really looking to quiet my truck down.

Sorry I guess I completely misread your post. You are looking for quiet so what use to be popular and probably still is for the 7.3 is a Walker muffler. If i remember right it is technically a big truck muffler but flows great so its a perfect fit for those trucks. I'll see if I can dig up a thread with part number on the other site.

The FTE resonator does quite a bit in reducing noise. I've heard a lot of good review of the Hushpower muffler in combination with the resonator. I believe Unbroken has a write-up about reducing noise over on the "other" site.

Also I have a FTE 4in resonator for sale if you are interested. Its got about 3-6k miles on it and comes with one stainless steel band clamp and a short piece of 4in pipe. I like my stuff loud so it came back off. Pm me if you are intersted. I believe they are $100 new from one of our sponsors. I would think with one or both it would be quiet as a mouse fart.

I'm hoping so. I have had a straight pipe for all 3 years that I have had my truck. It hasn't bothered me until recently. Maybe I'm growing up..

I would really like to put a resonator on there then add a muffler later if needed, but it is a pain to work on my truck in my current living situation. So next time I work on my truck, I am hoping to do everything at once that I need to.

The 4" is that loud?? Mine even sans muffler wasnt that loud until about 2200 rpms.

I know stacks are loud, 5" straight pipes are loud, but Ive never really had trouble keeping my truck quiet when I wanted to. Are you an aggressive driver?

It isn't the worst thing in the world, but between the regular diesel noises, Mud Grapplers, etc., I'm ready to quiet it down. It is ridiculously loud, IMO, from the outside for neighbors. Next on the list after exhaust is lowering the truck to a leveling kit and all terrains. Really it comes down to a straight pipe isn't really doing anything for power, so why not have a quieter truck.

I hear you OP on the mud grapplers!! Im surprised you can even hear any exhaust with those sob's!! LOL

Im in the same boat buddy, Im looking for some 20's and a 35" a/t. Like the MT Atz or nitto terra grappler. Mud tires dont stop the truck at all in snow. I also like those general grabber at2's.

What is the common practice on installing the resonator and muffler. Placing the muffler in front with the resonator to the rear? Attach the two directly together or leave some pipe between them?

I have a 5", it was straight piped for the longest time but i decided when i came upon a free brand new muffler, that i would try it . I like the muffled tone of the 5" better but straight piped they are both the same so stick with 4"

Just add the FTE resonator and a Hushpower muffler to what you already have. Put the resonator as close to the DP as possible. It's the same OD as your existing stuff so it'll fit right in there close.
You'll be amazed.
I just swapped a Magnaflow muffler for the Hushpower yesterday and already have the 30" resonator...my twin turbo cummins with 5" exhaust and twin dumps pointing at the ground is now as quiet as my old stock 06 Dodge with zero drone.
It's perfect.

FTE? Anyone have a link or full name? I am in a similar position as the OP... have 4" pipe into stacks in the bed. Have a 5" aeroturbine to go on. What does the resonator do? Would it affect performance?
