Wipers won't turn off...

Ok, so driving in intermittent rain the other day, I had the wiper on the slower of the 2 constant "on" positions. I pushed the sprayer (bugs) and went to turn the speed down, and the wipers stayed on.

Tried running the switch and sprayer through the on/off positions a few more times, still wouldn't go off. They WOULD go faster (fastest on setting) but not slower. (None of the intermittent settings.)

They also stayed on when the truck was off, only way to shut them off was to pull the large pink "main wiper" fuse, #106.

Any ideas or ways to trouble-shoot? Of just replace the whole switch/assembly?

As far as I can tell everything else works as normal.

So the truck has now been sitting in the garage three days (dry.) So its not a water related issue.

I have now pulled all the relays I know of, all the ones in the fuse box, and the ones in the 2 small boxes on the driver's side fender. No change, only way to shut them off is the square pink #106 fuse.

I have ruled out the multi-function switch, I took the column apart and took the entire switch out, they STILL stayed on.

So at this point, unless someone knows somewhere else to look for relays, I think I'll have to dig out the motor itself and start checking wiring.

Any other ideas?

My first truck had this issue. It ended up being a ****ty soldering job on the wiper circuit board. I resolder it and it worked well.

At this point that's the only thing I can think of. I'm going to have to start digging and figure out where the motor is and check it out.

Ok, so I've been doing research, and as far as I can tell the relays for the wiper motor are built into the motor itself.

So as far as I can tell, looking at wiring diagrams the only option is to replace the motor. I highly doubt it's the GEM or VSM.

nope, sounds like the motor problem! Ever replace it before? Rangers especially are know for them to go. I replaced the ranger wiper motor twice in me owning it and replace the one in my F150. It is a common problem!

Well, the wiper motor relay is definitely the issue. Took it off, plugged in just the motor, still on.

Tapped it a few times with a small hammer... shut off and worked briefly. 2-3 miles down the road (wipers on due to rain) it got stuck open again.

Oh well, guess I'll have to choke up the dough for a new motor.

Glad you got it figured out. I was about to suggest checking your fusepanel.for.green corrosion.

Believe me the first thing I thought was my GEM was going bad from a window leak. First thing I checked, lol
