Hey fellas, ive come across a offer but im not sure if its worth it. Its a 99 f250 reg cab 2wd w 315k on it. Beds a little beat but overall doesnt look bad. The problem the owner says is that the trans (auto) is out. It only has reverse. I asked him what trans was in it and he dodnt know so i dont think he knows what he has. Hes asking $2,500 obo for it as is or trade for equal value. Is this worth it? Is the engine cashed out at 315k and what kinda fix/cost will b needed for this? Any pointers to decent priced built trans? I have a cummins i DD so it will sit.

If the trans is really out, you are looking at dumping at least 2K right off the bat. 315K miles is not too bad if the engine has been taken care of. Check for blow-by, turbo play, etc. Also, if the injectors, HPOP, etc. are original, they may be towards the end of their lifespan. Try to get a scan tool on there to read codes/run diagnostic tests as well.

Yes, take off the intake and try to wiggle the shaft side-to-side and also try to push/pull it in and out. A little bit of side-to-side play is okay/normal, but you do not want any in and out play.

It is kind of hard to figure out if parts are original or not unless you have an honest seller. Most of the time re-manufactured parts actually say re-manufactured on there somewhere though.
