ZMBYKLR likes to "Wander"

So starting to get ZMBYKLR all squared away after her little stint away from me. LOL

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the suspension. While driving the truck, it has a tendency to wander. It doesn't feel like slack in the steering, it just likes to wander over more than I am steering sometimes when I change lanes and stuff. Also has an oversteer feel to it. That said, if I'm on a smooth road I can let the steering wheel go and it stays straight.

The truck has 2005 axles and suspension with an Icon 4.5" lift and 1" front spacer on 37" Super Swamper M16's.

What stuff should I be checking to find the issue?

Also look at the slop in the steering box. My buddies Ex has a similar issue, and we replaced the steering box with a redhead and it all went away.

Yeah, I've read that. I may replace it regardless just because of the age and miles. I've heard good things about the Redhead ones.

A red head box would do great things towards making it steer better....

What pressure are you running the tires at? I wouldn't expect it to steer perfectly on those tires

50psi. I'm debating taking the lift and all off and going to some 33's. Haven't made up my mind yet but if the truck acts like it's supposed to (and it's giving me every indication that it will) it should trap close to 120mph. Not sure how many times I want to do that on 37's, lol.

I would try a different set of wheels and tires and see what happens

It could be as simple as tire pressure. I run my 33's at 50 on the front. Much more than that it is scary on the highway.

Before you buy a steering box, why not just adjust the set screw in the box? My box has 265k, my old truck I ran to 310k. Never replaced a steering box. I had to adjust both of them around 175k-200k. But never replaced one. We have several other 7.3 era trucks that I fixed the same way.

If someone over torqued the ball joints and or tie rods it will cause memory steer. Like when you change lanes it wants to continue that direction instead of recentering. I'm not sure if anyone has changed that stuff or not, just giving ideas

my 6.0 did that when they were bad too. Just throwing that out there.

Also when I was trying to track down my problem some people mentioned the hubs and/or u joints binding up from being old.

Also check your pitman arm nut.

Best have someone sit in the driver's seat and turn the steering wheel back and forth (engine off) to the point that the wheels want to turn but not further. You crawl underneath and look at all the components and check for abnormal movement.

I plan to put one on my Ex just because. I want to try the Koolaid.

Best koolaid there is. They simply work. Steering gets tight. I had one in all of my 7.3s.

My 6.7 is still tight, but a redhead will go in when the time comes.

That's pretty well what it feels like.
