Contemplating switching to synthetic oil. Saw lots of oil comparison charts and read all the posts in this thread and to be honest it's all greek to me. Which is the best one? I have a Schaeffer dealer just down the road from me, so that would be real handy. Is the Ford synthetic from the dealer any good? Thought they were already using synthetic until last oil change when I happen to be standing there and saw the guy dump conventional in. I have a fleet charge account so don't ever see a repair order just a bill at the end of the month.

I sell the oil lots of these guy on here are raving about. But if it was up between the Schaffer's and the Motor craft, Schaffer's should out perform it. Our oil makes motorcraft look bad, and Schaffer is probably the closest I've seen to ours on the market, at least in these engines. Just my two cents.

And I'd like to mention, all testing, including API and astm slates are just a guide. They are good tests, but it's far more important to know what the oil does inside your engine when fuel, soot, dirt, and all other kids of trash are mixed with it. Because that's what every engine does to every oil used. No testing with new oils can recreate what you engine puts that oil through. So that's why it's best to test oil after you're done with it. Because you want to always change good oil.

Give Jim a call. Order. Oil shows up 2-3 days later. Easier than going to the store...leaves more time for:blitzed:

Nothing against Jim but I don't want to be mail ordering oil. I just want to go to the local distributor and pick up the oil.

I run Brad Penn (Penn Grade as it's called now) in the race car. I found two local distributors in my area that carry it. I just go there and pick it up.

I'm hooked up with a Motorcraft supply house in my area and get very good pricing on Motorcraft and Ford parts. I don't mind using a different oil but I want to go and pick it up.

I'm gonna send in my original oil for sampling and the Motorcraft 5w-40 when the time comes. I'm curious what Ford puts in these motors.

Most assuredly your prerogative, but I'm curious what the difference is between having oil delivered to your door and any other item you might order via phone/mail/interwebz? Seriously curious. You might hate all mail order stuff.

when I went to the le page online it said that some of the oil was dyed red. Any specific reason?

Same reason Royal Purple dyes theirs purple. As well as to be able to guarantee 100k mile drains in OTR trucks, we need to make sure people aren't mixing. We were testing a Volvo D13 once (I think the report is on this forum somewhere) and the oil was doing its job well. Then it just fell off a cliff at one point. Turned out they topped it off with Rotella. I can usually tell by looking at the add pack though. And we do have undyed versions as well.

How close is the red dye compared to trans fluid?

On the race car transmission, I use tractor fluid. I throw in a quart of ATF to tint it red so I know the difference between motor oil and trans fluid when I was running conventional motor oil. Now, I run Brad Penn motor oil which is tinted green.

I get that a lot. If anyone wants the un dyed oil, I think I can do that in the pails. I'm not sure the lead time on it though.

spoke to Jim at LE for the first time today. Great conversation, he definitely has knowledge on oils. Finally got around to purchasing the 8854 5w-40 today, going to run it shortly here. Thanks Jim!

so what is the pricing on le oil products? comparable to rotella, amsoil, royal purple is it sold by the gallon or 5 gallons? i assume shipping cant be cheap on a 5 gallon pail of oil. sounds like all who make the leap swear by the stuff.

Rotella is cheaper, I'd say it's inline with amsoil and royal purple, that being said their oil has a very diverse pricing strategy it seems, I see amsoil online fairly reasonably priced, same with royal purple, you go to the local parts store and it is almost $20 per quart.
