Throw a trailer behind it and put it to work. Use good inexpensive oil, Rotella comes to mind. Change at 500 miles or so. Repeat. After that use the oil you will run for it's life. Personally, I would chip it from the get go but not beat on it. Work it, work it hard, but don't be mean to it.
most importantly...vary the rpm and load on the engine (ie, piston rings) for the first 500-1000 miles...
so don't just take it out and set the cruise control on the interstate...
