Well, without taking it apart, all of the techs at the Ford dealership in Deming, NM, believe that it is the torque converter. The fluid wasn't as bad as I had thought. The fluid DID have a lot of shiny metal in it... The billet input shaft is still in good shape, and the TC hub "had a lot of wobble to it"...

Now, that is TC # 2 that I have wrecked... In the mean while, I have had a STOCK TRANS, AND STOCK TC last, with the same type of tuning, last for 130,000 miles... And both of the TCs that I have had self destruct, have held up in 1,000 hp trucks... my driving habits have not changed. I have yet to do as boosted launch, on either TC, I have yet to tow heavy on the latest one, and I only towed 17 K one time with the first one... for a whopping 14 miles on I-10...

Also.... I LOVE THE GEARHEAD TRANS TUNING... so far... Very clean, very strong, and very smooth. No more jerky pedal. I ran it from 50 up to 85 on the interstate, and it stayed below 40 psi, but climbed MPH very well.

I also put new shocks on there... WOW, those factory shocks were crap, and wore the hell out... The bilstien 5100s were a great addition.

Wow - you sure you havnt had a f'd pump this entire time? I cant see how you keep killing the converter regardless of where it's from.

My stock trans was OK when the first TC went.. That was just a TC upgrade, stock everything else. #2 was a full built trans (a whole new unit) and TC... I shared NOTHING between the two transmissions...

No man, I like my 5 speed, just need to figure out what is going on...
How would that solve anything...he's breaking converters not transmissions
yup
I agree lol
Ill put a little more to it this round. But, I can honestly say that I have not beat on these things at all, and they keep dying...
Im very interested in what the actual cause is.
same here.. this **** is getting expensive... And this in on the near stock rig.... I knew the other rig was gonna be pricey, but damn...

450's are especially hard on these converters. The factory lasted because it slipped and lessened the shock load. The aftermarket stuff isn't slipping so the shock load is killing parts.

Back in the day if you build a Turbo 400 in a chevy motorhome, you didn't make it shift hard, or even very firm because everything broke.

I honestly feel that F450 trucks with built trans should run softer tuning, a little slip is better.

I'm leaning towards that way of thinking, Tadd... Not smooshie, but not neck snapping...

Didn't Travis's truck just break a converter too?

The thing about something that heavy us if you can feel a hard shift that's no good. I think travs truck weighed 11500, everyday cruising weight... His truck shifted way too hard.

Gotta remember replacing clutches every year or two is always better than breaking shafts, converters, or gears... My little truck runs pretty soft shifting for this reason
