Hey all, I'm new here and I just picked up my first diesel over the fall. 01 f350 long bed, 6 speed manual. I'm looking to get new wheels and tires. Sounds dumb, but I'm shooting for good MPG. I'm getting 20-21hwy and I'd like to keep that if not improve it. It has the factory 16"wheels with 265/75's on it now. I'd like to jump to 17" wheels with 295/70's or so. Anyone have pics of this combo on their truck? I have the 2 3/4 leveling kit and I think it has a 1" body lift, so it looks really funny with the 265's. Any info would be great, thanks.

:whs: if you want mpg upgrade your turbo upgrade your exhaust get a better tuner put a better IC and a CAI on it and most importantly keep your right foot out of the throttle LOL

That wont help mpgs on a stock truck. Other than keeping his foot out of the throttle. To achieve mpgs, none of the factory parts are an issue.

If you improve airflow improve tuning then on any vehicle you will improve mpg's. The last time I drove from Norfolk Va to lawrenceburg ky I had a 3" dp a tuner and a cold air intake and I got 25mpg with a fuel leak coming from the fuel pump and that's all I upgraded now if I were to have an IC and an upgraded compressor wheel I would've probably saw 27mpg with the same fuel leak

So you're telling me that everyone of you guys on this thread here dont think that by getting rid of the very restrictive factory exhaust and putting a straight pipe in its place and every one of y'all put a tymar intake or a cold air intake of some sort and at least replacing the some of the IC pipes for you sd guys and upgrading the turbo doesn't provide better fuel mileage? What do you guys think they are there for looks or something? Any kind automotive mechanic will tell you that by increasing airflow that its makes it easier for the engine to do its job therefore making it more fuel efficient LOL.

But I am wondering if Norfolk to Lawrenceburg is all down a very steep hill.

I have a TS performance 6 position chip, CAI and 4" exhaust.

So, are you saying that with my 410 gears, taller tires wouldnt lower the rpms by slowing the rotation down? Yes, I realize that it won't be by much, but everyone knows that anything over 2000 rpms on a 7.3 drinks the fuel like crazy. And right now at 65 mph I sit right at 1900rpms

Yeah it would theoretically work but like you said not by much but also keep in mind the higher your truck sits the more drag it creates

Bigger tires=more rolling resistance
That'll more than cancel out your rpm drop.
If you want fuel mileage, buy a car, or slow down.

Regardless of what the fuel mileage is (I was just hoping to keep the same mpg) I want bigger wheels and tires. I want to go 17's for wheels. Any recommendations on tire brands? Right now I have Toyos, they seem pretty good.

I habe 275/65/20 Michelin's on my 2000 regular cab. Truck is a 2wd, 3.73 rear axle, and my mileage dis not drop with the taller tires. Well, stop and go might have a tad, I haven't checked it since I put them on. Long highway mpg had not changed though. Running 70mph is 1750 rpm, I don't drive like a pissed off 16 year old, and on my old stock sized tires, the truck got 18.9 hand calculated mixed driving (I live in the city), and 21 highway running 68mph at 1900 rpm. My commute to work last week, I put 130 miles on, and have only used a tick over 1/8th of a tank. I have a 38 gallon tank, and regularly put 550-580 miles on before I refuel. Again, I haven't done the top it off, track miles, etc. lately.

Everything you've been told, read in a bank$ ad, or saw in a magazine is ***kin horse****. Sorry, but no you are so far off of what really happens that you wont know where to start.

While I was able to get my best mpg in my 00 ccsb on 35s in the race tune it had very little to do with the tune. It was all about how it was driven.

I ran stock fuel, oil, and turbo with php tunes and could sneak up on 20mpg riiight after a thorough servicing but as the fluids wore in the mileage rapered back off. Empty(still had a ton of chit in the bed, literally) it was around 15. Here's the catch, you wouldnt have enjoyed the ride because it was painfully slow for that reason. Running 3.73s and two lane highways coupled with a 37 I would lockout od to keep the rpms alive somewhat and shift into od on the 65mph roads. Then the mileage drops there...

Now im running 35s with muuuuch more power, air, and fuel and mileage is 14. I changed my approach. I have one tune, it is wimpy at 1/4 throttle and at wot it gives all the fuel there is. I simply push the pedal so the truck isnt burning rubber or smoking all over(which isnt an issue with a bb charger) and get to the speed I want and then backout. If I drive it how I enjoy to, its 10mpg.

If mileage is your goal, leave it stock. Driving like a grandpa is the one, the only secret to decent mpgs. Hate to tell ya but 20 isnt doable in any 4wd lb cc truck even with stock tires. Maybe 17. Again, dictated by driving style.

We used to have an active mpg forum elsewhere and if you saw what it took to achieve 25mpg in a 2wd psd you would feel foolish for asking while owning oversized tires. Aint gonna happen bucko.

Ive driven my 7.3 all but a handful of the 260k miles on it. I got it new. I know a wee bit about mileage. Stock, lifted, leveled etc...
