I just dont like telling someone a 400 dollar intake is gonna give them 2mpg when it wont. Just lije it wont give them the 25hp the box says it will.

and not all intakes cost $400 in fact you can to autozone and build your own for like $200 at the most and the reason why cold air intakes and intercoolers are so popular with the diesel trucks nowadays (especially 7.3's) is because they work they do more than just lower egt's (which is because you have more colder air going into the cylinders. which changes the air/fuel ratio to more air than fuel which means more fuel being burnt efficiently.) colder air means more air being packed into a cylinder now just a cold air intake alone wont increase fuel mileage by much but you put an exhaust on as well and you will notice a difference especially over long distances. and tuners help as well because they reprogram the computer to run a slightly leaner air/fuel ratio and that also increases your HP #. thats why on a diesel truck factory ride height and factory tires if you had those basic upgrades 25 mpg is achievable if you can keep your foot out of it and/or have cruise control.

Jesus Christ, you talk to me like I stumbled into this site last week with a clapped out 97 with stock parts on it...

I didnt say every intake was $400...any nice aftermarket ones are.

As for spending $200 to skap together junk from the parts counter. I wouldn't waste MY time doing so. I adapted my 38r to a piece of 4" and have a donaldson hydrophobic filter on there. 89$ total...

No egts troubles what so ever...but ive only got a 550hp setup...

And in 500k + miles running 7.3s ive never got 25mpg. Nobody has unless they were running a rclb. So shut the ***k up with your "knowledge".

This is hilarious...I owned a truck from the first year and the last of the 7.3s run but ill be damned. I had no idea a cold air intake did sooooo much. If wildbill is right I bet you can pick up 100hp putting on a cai and 4" exhaust.

Anybody listening here. If you want the best performance on a stock truck get a fuel system(rock solid fuel pressure, volume, and waaay better filtration), an upgraded hpop(adrenaline, t500, or duals) and a 38r...until those three you dont need intake or exhaust.

Id do a donaldson/6637 filter as an "intake" not a true blingy kit. An aluminized 5" pipe, and save your money for real upgrades.

With a intercooler, IAT at the air filter won't make a noticeable difference.
It's not like under hood temps are 1000 degrees or something.

Jake, brother, the 5" was an exhaust..not the piece of pipe needed to mate the filter to the intake...buy you're right 4"...I've used a piece of steel that had been blasted and has red primer on it...

Derail here. 317 miles of city driving, 18.6 gallons...that's 17.04 mpg. Bone stock, on 275/65/20 michelins..that's a 34.5" tall tire...and I know I will probably get crucified for saying it..but I am about 4k beyond a oil change according to the sticker on my windshield from ford. Wonder what fresh oil and filters would do...

Need to do an average, diesel has a ton of foam, and filling can have great inconsistencies.

That's pretty average. You see I have got 18.9 in town multiple times, but on my old 32" tires. The only variable in this is the 34" tires I have been running since May...that I got 530 miles out of pulling my 7k lb travel trailer.

17-18 is pretty standard. Occasionally 20, if everything is perfect, but not anywhere near often, lol.
In the winter, 15-16 is way more common.

If you spend the time, and the money, to consistently break 20 mpg, it's at best, a break even proposition, which means you're losing money.

Agreed. I am not a mpg person, I just was stating that it's not hard to get good mpg driving like a normal person in a truck with stock everything. I have broke 20 on the highway multiple times.

In a rclb truck, I dont doubt those numbers.

Im not sure where we got sideways. My only point was people with cclb, like the op, who also has larger tires shouldnt be speculating 20mpg...throw all the airflow mods you want, if you are pushing a truck hard enough to see the gains in airflow an intake and 4" exhaust CAN get you are waaay over wk rpms which makes mpg discussions com-***kin-pletely irrelevant.

Im not disagreeing with you Jason, but figured rather you might understand my point and be able to say what Im apparently failing to.

High airflow and efficiency max' arent physically happening where mpg do on a 7.3.

My thought with a 7.3 was the powerband is fairly narrow, keeping the motor riiiiight on the belly of yhat sweet spot is where it happens. Get into the throttle to get boost going, get as quickly as possible to the target speed and then back out. If rpms are 1500-2k, golden. If they are 2200 or less you're ok. Over that and boost seems to approach the 5+ lbs mark and the guzzling ensues. The same scenario that ruins fuel economy for 6.4s.

In my truck, with the mods listed, and every other combo ive had that nets me about 15mpg...not bad but a far cry from 20...
