Well, I want to post something that may be or may not be relevant to the OP. I am not loyal to any one company or other. I have ordered parts or suggested parts from just about every manufacturer for a host of different trucks...my own and my friends...based upon what the use of the vehicle is.
I am a large fan of PMF. I am also a large fan of OUO and Carsli...heck there are a couple more, like some guys that build SCORE strucks and buggies.
In my research, I have found many a many company that build similar parts, if not even identical looking parts. Sometimes there is just one way to skin a cat.
Good thing patent laws are as they are, or every gun manufacturer, suspension manufacturer and tire manufacturer would be out of business...except michelin...de dion and stoner...oh wait reverse that.
So Ill talk about 3 relevent companies in this argument and why I chose PMF for my current adaptation.
I am on my 3rd, no 4th evolution for suspension on my truck. I thought I knew what I wanted, but was led down a few quick wrong paths of least resistance. I have finally decided that I need something special. Well, because I am special...so my wife says...
I have frankensteined my truck and want it to do what i was never really designed to do...
Anyways. My friends or rather associates, ok a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy that robbed a guy who knows the SCORE truck people, well those SCORE truck building people are really busy and dont have the time or the patience to listen to my quandary about what I want my mythical truck to do and how I want it right or wrong. They want the cc number and be off with you...
OUO doesnt want to do that either. They are a business and rightly so. I dont blame them. They are closed on sat and sun. They arent going to make custom one off parts for me based on some dream I had at night. They build huge heavy rigs that are for jumping in the sand, looking cool at shows...They do it well. Thats their purpose and they make some cool stuff.
Carsli suspension...same thing, they are busy and a business. They however build cool stuff that is more my style. Lighter, long travel, made for driving fast anywhere, not so much for wheeling but will make due if needs be...
But again. They are too big and too busy to deal with my whining, sunday wrenching mistakes which result in a phone call begging for help on how to fix it.
I dont blame them, I wouldnt want me as a customer.
PMF is a little different. I call or email, describe a theory or an idea, I get told yes, no, your out of your mind...and then gives me a reason to back up any of those answers. I have plenty of friends who say "it cant be done" simply because its hard, or well its different. PMF doesnt do that. If it can be done and it shows some sort of advantage it will be done. If it shows no use other than just to make you smile...well, hes told me no on a couple of things and has incorporated a couple things. (He is building me something wacky right now)
There have been many of a time where he has told me to purchase it elsewhere because its cheaper, or it already exists, its well made and its good deal. He has told me, "no" to certain ideas or things that I have asked to buy from him or have him make, you dont want that and here is why. He has said, hey save your money, keep your eye on the goal...
And most important, when I screw something up on my install because I am lazy, dont have the right tool, or just plain dont know how to do it...shhh dont tell anyone...he calls me back on the weekends and even in the evenings with help...
Thats worth every penny to me.
CaryT or obswiz on some forums is like this too BTW.
If I had a million dollars and wanted to build a big mud truck my money would probably go to OUO. If I had a million dollars and I wanted to build a really fast f150 or something of that nature I would have carlsi (the mathmaticians), camburg (the traditionalists) and PMF (the imagineer) fight it out, collabarate and build me something wildly fun.
But I dont have it because the lotto gods have not smiled upon me, and well, I decided not to go to medical school. And as I did stay in a holiday inn express last night, it did not pan out in the stock market like the commercials said it would.
When the missus goes back to work, she said that I can have a bobbed deuce and a half. I have already talked to PMF about it. Its going to have 52 inch tires, coilovers at all four corners, rockwells and some sort of 3 link or 4 link...They are going to design it. Oh and I am going to shove a cummings and an allison into it...
And thats the cool thing about PMF...ford chevy dodge... bobbed 2.5 ton trucks...(wife wants a pinzgauer...)
So anyone reading this little rant that is going on...no one owns 4 links or traction bars or radius arms adjustable or not. The newest invention in cars is the cupholder. (well not really but some old dude who really really knew cars would show me some nineteen thirty...pick a year...of some model car that already had it... fuel injection, traction control, abs, air bags...pushrod suspension (my mk1 mini from 1965 has hydrolastic pushrods)
Ok my rant is over.
