The early round tube EGR coolers were a "welded tube" design. The square ones were a corrugated plate (and soldered joint) design. The early design has a significant disadvantage with its ability to withstand heat. If the oil cooler never restricts, it is probably fine, but just choke the flow some and it is more vulnerable to failure.

He decided not to get it. Interior was disgusting, had FICM performance code (0611 I think), had a fuel leak at the filter housing, chunk of paint missing off front bumper, dents, dings, etc. Salesman told him the truck was in near perfect condition. All this before we made the 2 1/2 hour drive to see it. Truck was slap ass empty of fuel. We told him we wanted to take a long test drive while I checked some temps and such with my X3, but we had barely gone 2 miles before he started pushing us back towards the dealership. Needless to say my brother wasn't too happy with the guy. We were there a half hour maybe. Got to love a shady ass salesman.
