Having time to really think things through and act appropriately is a nice situation to be in. I've had time to reflect on former stupidity with this this engine, and recall the first tunes I ran through the truck. For reference, the truck made 265/445 with the stock muffler removed and a 3.5" side exit pipe. The same day with a race tune loaded it make 415/730. That tune was "fun" but it sucked to drive with the stick shift.
My favorite tune was a tune I wrote that I dubbed 20hp Tow Brake. It actually made 282/560 peaks but the torque at 1700rpm was up about 120 over stock. It was also the first time I really felt that I had the exhaust brake feature working well with the manual transmission. As configured by SCT the exhaust braking was too aggressive at low engine speeds and would cough the turbo. Anyway, that tune I also worked extensively with the pedal mapping to arrive at the best drivability I'd had from a tune, stock like drivability, yet more powerful.
I think that's what I'm still looking for, more power with stock type drivability. I have no need for smoke, perhaps a slight haze at wide open throttle, or a tiny huff from a stop on clutch out drive away. And I think I'm looking for something more like 300rwhp and 600rwtq.
That said, I don't think I need to go bigger with the injectors. I would still like to do the DuraStroke Stage 1 turbo though, because more airflow is never a bad thing. And I'm going to roll the ECM and FICM back to the original early 2005 programming, then see what PHP can do in the way of an FICM tune to compliment that old 20hp Tow Brake tune I had so much success with. I don't think it would take much to push that tune to my target numbers via the FICM and with the better turbo.
So I really do appreciate the feedback from everyone thus far.
