1997 F-350 4x4

Hello everyone,
last Thursday I went to a remote T-mobile site for work. Which required me to put it in 4x4. I don't use the 4x4 much in my truck, only when going to remote sites on mountain tops. So anyway, I put it in 4 wheel drive and I couldn't get the automatic hubs to lock in. No traction on the front wheels. So I was wondering should I ditch the autolocking hubs for manual hubs, or just troubleshoot and repair or replace the auto hubs? I like the fact that I don't have to get out of the truck to lock it in. But it also needs to work. Keep in mind I have a 1997 F-350 PSD 7.3L crew cab with the 8' bed, so it's not really a great 4x4 to begin with. Way to long and heavy in the front with no weight in the back.
