I know most guys are members of other forums and some are not. But I kinda started to get things heated in a post(#34) on the ORG about larger intercooler tubes that Banks uses http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-0l-performance-parts-discussion/160422-inter-cooler-poll-4.html

Let hear it guys. Personally I see no improvement with larger pipes. Larger intercooler yes, but not larger pipes....whether it be cold side, hot side or both. I know there's guys that say they've noticed less lag and better response with the Banks intercooler. But was it from the piping or the intercooler itself? Also heard guys say that the larger pipes hurt their trucks lag and response.

I'm more interested in hearing about the larger diameter piping(not the intercooler) on why it's just soo much better over stock that the Banks lovers think.

In about a week ill be back home and I'm going to put my stock intercooler pipes back on.
I won't have dyno sheets, but I will have how it feels loaded done with 15-17k behide the truck.

I feel like I lost throttle response and spoolup got worse with the banks tubes and intercooler. I put a no limit cold side pipe and it got a little better. I'm going to do the hot side in a couple of months and see if that helps more.

Does no limit use 3" or 3.5" ?

i use 3" . the 3.5" serves virtually no purpose other than to slow velocity. my pipes are not built for anyting of the sort, mine are built to dissipate heat and remove restriction. oh and purty up the engine bay.

There was a guy I used to talk to quite a bit on a different forum and we talked about this a LOT. Consensus was that it definitely slows down spool up, so it will seem laggier. He said it did drop his cruising EGT's a bit though when he was towing heavy. Since he primarily towed heavy with the truck, it was worth it for him. Since I use my truck as a toy playing around... I prefer the quick spool up. I'd stick with the 3" stuff myself.

I've wondered what smaller piping...maybe 2.5" would do for smaller injector and turbo setups. If it'd be and quicker spooling

You'd begin to choke the engine out, in a sense

Many, many years ago I had an ATS IC kit for my OBS. It used 2 1/4" piping. I enjoyed it. Nothing changed other than a slight drop in EGT's. I went to a Banks 3" pipe kit and a Hellman IC on the same setup and the truck ran night and day different. Spoolup improved, EGT's dropped even further, boost was down, power was up. My point is I think there is a happy medium and 3" is it.

More volume less velocity?

I don't want to start a brand battle, but Chevy runs a smaller intercooler pipe. I'm sure it's about 2.5 inch. Would be Interesting to see how the 6.0 would do.

I'm thinking the intercooler made the biggest difference there, but who knows. Would have been interesting to see the difference with just the piping and THEN an intercooler swap. Just adds an extra variable there.

I run banks piping and a big head with stock intercooler. I don't know that its any laggier with them but I will say my egts are 50-75 degrees cooler cruising and almost 100 less when I tow. I'm happy with them and would like to upgrade the intercooler eventually.

Putting my kit on now... after looking at all parts.. my theory is... Banks has increase volume for supply but then is using the high ram to change direction and increase velocity when needed.. velocity is restriction.. there is a point in time when it is required.
the slower the air enters the cac the easier it is to disperse to utilize the entire cooler..also the slower the air passes through the cooler a better thermal transfer will be achieved.
at the elbow.. once again the slower air will change direction in a more uniform manner. The design of the elbow is interesting. .. it should act as a velocity stack. This is the very point that velocity is important... one other thought is that it may not be as crucial with a ported manifold. I ported my own and shaped each port to increase flow and velocity..
I will have some data later this week.
I was originally going to use the stock piping but after analyzing the shape and design of all components. . It should work well... we will see!!

We saw drastically different results yesterday on josh collester's truck he went from banks to mine. Gained significant spoolup and dropped egt. I believe the banks will drop egt ,just make it lose power and lag more. Why even go there when you can have the best of both worlds.

Josh probably had a drop in EGT's because of the increased spool up; not necessarily because of the pipe size. Josh's truck is running a S472 (?) and it hardly spools anyways. LOL So of course, with more turbo action, it will keep things a little cooler. Guys with stock turbos probably wouldn't see much of a difference in spool up, and EGT's would be lower with the Banks setup because of the factors described above. Just speculation, though.

I installed my Banks I.C. and noticed no increase in lagg.. my truck only rolls one day a week maybe so if there was an increase. . It was not enough to notice.. my truck has a Barder stg2 and diy ported intake and is quite pepy on the bottom and top...
IC lowered cruising temps 25-50 deg..
