It's likely turbo time. 35psi runs have been hard on my stock set up.

I keep getting told T4 or nothing from many people I respect in this industry so I figured I'd come here and get a few more opinions.

My sig is accurate so based on that...

Will I be happy with a KC38 or Diesel Site or should I pull the trigger on T4?

3000 miles a year, pull 12,000lbs all summer, go to the dump, screw around at the odd stop light and burn off the odds set of tires. I'm not chasing more power, just reliable, consistent performance.

Thoughts?

I don't particularly like the 38r in comparison to the BASB t4 that I had, but that's not to say the 38r isn't a great turbo, it doesn't spool quite as fast, and is really noisy compared to the BASB. I actually prefer my 6.0l with powermax sound to the 38r. But the 38r did as advertised for my parents 02, eliminated surge and cooler EGT's, so overall can't complain

KC is coming out with more options very soon. Might want to wait. These would be drop in turbos. Sounds like they will be similar to the SXE line. A 63.5, 66 and 69. Will have to see how these perform and if the mild built guys will go this route over a T4. Im interested in the 63.5 as im just over 400 HP and tow often. Probably wake my bottom end up a bit more.

I run a GTP38R on my truck. Mainly because I live in CA and have to pass smog. If I had more freedom and had to do it again, I would go T4 with a S364.5SXE in a heartbeat. Performs noticeably better than the 38R. Better spool, flows more, quieter, etc...

X2, but I'm real anxious to see what the KC line up is gonna be like. Should be a big game changer for us DD kinda guys that are looking to play some as well.

I've not run a 38R but have been running a 364.5SXE for almost a year. I've got a 12K LB 5er that I tow around the PNW. I've not been able to find much fault with the turbo.

I have just seen too many turbo's designed for the stock mount configuration be a big let down. Namely the D66 and all it's variants. The GTP38R is about the only turbo that has proven itself as being a viable upgrade on the stock platform. Maybe that will change, I guess we will see.

Still though, I would much rather invest my money in a T4 complete mount kit and Borg Warner SXE turbo for around $2200 than dump $1900 into a stock style turbo and bellowed up-pipes. To me, that is a no brainer.

This is the perfect kit for guys looking to go T4...

Agreed. The only thing I can add to this, is to say that Charlie/KC turbo has an excellent reputation with the quality of the Turbo's he's put out over the years. He's dedicated his time and money to specifically the Turbo, where others have tried to include the Turbo development to their line up of parts that they already offer. I guess the best analogy I can think of here is, the difference between a General Practitioner Doctor, and a Specialist Doctor, Charlie being a specialist. I Pray for his business to continue to grow, as he continues his Turbo Developments.

I'm hoping the the 63.5 is a game changer for the average joe who want's good towing performance and acceptable spool-up when daily driving.

I have had both the 38r and the sxe364.5 and the sxe gets my vote hands down. But if your stock sticks then the 38r might be a better choice.

Why would a turbo that doesn't spool as easily as the 364.5 be a better choice with stock injectors?

I'm in the same boat as Cjfarm111, I had a 38r and now a 364.5 and it is a night and day difference.

Cost, ease of install, and he is coming from a Gtp38. A 38r is a long proven improvement over the Gtp38. Plus he said this, "I'm not chasing more power, just reliable, consistent performance."

I would say its because at this point A lot of people have already upgraded the up pipes. If a drop in can be had for $1600 its a big savings for many people. And its easy to install, not everyone is willing to to a T-4 for one reason or another.

The market for a turbo in the $1400 - $1600 range will be much greater than a market for $2200+. The 38R somewhat proves this. We all know its not the BEST turbo. Obviously a T4 setup is better but a ton of people still go the 38R route due to price and simplicity.

And we all know many people buy on impulse without research.

The KC38R seems to be doing well. Im hopeful for the new models.

Yes cost and ease of install was my only reason for staying with the 38r. It is proven, tough turbo that will run along time with stock injectors.

Well, I was going to wait for the new KC but my stocker is done... I hunted down a barely used GTP38R so that's what I'll use.

Didn't have the intake boot with it so I have to get that still.
