okay this is my paps truck that is an 07 f550 ccfb strictly work truck with 27000 miles on it. it has the zf6 and has a zoodad mod thats it. other than freshly blow head gaskets what would you guys recommend doing to it to pull that kind of weight a little easier. thinking of going with mpd's full 6.0 recovery package or something like that cant remember but not very up to speed with 6.0 performace. i just need it to be as reliable as possible and a little faster wouldnt hurt either. he runs the piss out of this truck with 30000lbs behind it so it is not babied. any help is great!

Get a truck that's properly equipped to tow that much weight.

Max COMBINED weight rating for an F-550 is 33000lbs with 4.88 gear, high capacity trailer tow package, 6.0 diesel and automatic trans.

You've stated yours at 40000 lbs.

You ever get in an accident with it, you're ****ed.

I wouldn't worry much about upgrading the performance. I'd worry about it being able to stop properly 7000lbs past max rated weight.

Edit: Manual trans is 28000lbs GCWR. Now you're 9000lbs over.

If it doesn't have the heavy trailer tow package (or has 4.30 gears) that weight drops to 26000 for the manual trans. Up to 11,000 over.

It has 5.13 I think they are LOW we have it registered for 36000 but only once in a while we tow over that. We use it about 4-5 times a year to pull 36 foot gooseneck with 4 tractors to tractor shows. He ordered the trailer with the biggest brakes you can get. It stops it fine but yea we know ere screwed if anything happens over wieght. but just looking for ideas of what you guys would do to fix this truck right the first time

Brakes would definitely be the most important. We've crossed the scales at right about 30k before with oversized loads with our F350 dually. Our trailer has brakes and we have a tow-tune with jake brake and it actually stops very well. We'll probably upgrade the braking system next time it needs pads still though.

Like stated above only moddest power upgrades would be needed. We can tow at 60mph with no issues despite the massive amount of wind drag on our loads. So also like stated earlier, braking would be the biggest thing you need to address.

Our truck also has an AFE intake, Absolute egr delete manifold, and is now studded. We put a new oil cooler in as well when we did the studs. Besides brakes, the only other thing we'll probably do is a Hellmann intercooler.

Stock clutch at that weight probably isn't going to live for a very long time.

First upgrades should be brakes and clutch.

None of that changes the manufacturers GCWR though. Be careful.

Ok so address the weak links like clutch brakes studs oil cooler etc. Would a tuned ficm intake and exhqust be good or not

I wouldn't worry about the ficm. Just get a good tow tune with jake brake from Innovative or TSD or someone like that. I didn't mess with our exhaust because we're pulling permit loads and I don't want any hassle over it.

Leave the FICM alone. You need to get rid of heat, not add more. A clutch and brakes like said... then engine wise, add a coolant filter, an EGR delete if you can, and keep an eye on the oil cooler. I'd already suspect oil cooler being that you popped gaskets. Bulletproof makes a nice external oil cooler, probably right up the alley of this truck. Stock intake is fine, but a 4" turbo back would help get exhaust gasses out. Studs should go in if you're already in there.

An ficm tune will be beneficial, but its going to need to be mild, one that pulls pw down low and across the map. The closest you're going to get is idp's mild flash

I'd imagine a high flow intake manifold would help this truck out a bunch too... maybe an intercooler upgrade since you're not too worried about spool time, but keeping heat out when travel ling down the road would be nice.

The guys are right... simple and effective airflow mods are what you should do.. Add studs, bigger clutch and a nice tow tune and it'll be a beast...

Intake
Exhaust (if your not worried about it drawing attention)
Intercooler
Clutch
Tow tune with Jake Brake
external oil cooler
coolant filter
EGR delete OR bypassed one (depending on if you need to look legal)

Thats the short and sweet list... If you wanna go more than that there are plenty of guys that will help you spend your money!
