Ok guys the transmission in my truck decided it no longer wanted to operate properly on my way home from work yesterday. I was leaving a stoplight at 1/2-3/4 throttle and when the tranny tried shifting into 3rd gear... it said nope. RPMs steadily rose until I let off the throttle... then it finally threw itself back into 2nd gear (harshly I might add.) 1-2 shift is fine and good, reverse is good, but no matter if I try manually shifting or letting it go in auto, it will not shift into 3rd gear. The RPMs rise but the truck decelerates until it finally goes back into 2nd gear. No codes (at least I couldn't see any with Auto Enginuity) and fluid smells ok still.

29 minutes is all you wait? So impatient...

It could be a bad shift solenoid, or a stuck shift valve in the valve body. It won't be a bad direct clutch because that clutch is also used for reverse.

Sorry trying to get an answer before bed LOL

I'm hoping for shift solenoid or something simple. Where should I start? Planning on draining the pan and dropping it tomorrow evening. This would be the 2-3 shift solenoid?

Sorry to hijack the thread but I got a question Mark. But since is pertains to the same subject. I thought I might ask it here instead my 4R100 Sometimes has a rev slam hard shift from 1st to 2nd at WOT could it be a sticking valve?

The place to start is reading the codes. If there are no codes then the next thing to check would be a stuck shift valve in the valve body.

There are two shift solenoids. Neither one is a 2-3 solenoid. The solenoid that makes the 2-3 shift is SS1.

Is it tuned? It's really hard to make a shift in a 4R100 flare during a shift.

Found this in the pan. All shift valves appear to be ok, none were stuck open. It's crinkled metal from inside the tranny I guess.

That looks like a machining chip left over from when the case was manufactured. It's been an ongoing problem to get chips removed that are clinging to the case. They have been known to ride around for years before breaking off and laying in the pan. I wouldn't worry about that piece.

You're incredible!

I found something like this a looong time ago. Never got an answer and have been wondering what it was and how it got there. Expecting to find more everytime I dropped the pan but never have. Heres to ignorance

Solenoids checked out fine. Pins 11 and 12 which control pressure ohmed out higher than they should have, but I don't think that would cause my issue. Solenoids 1 and 2 were within range.

The 2-3 shift valve needs to stroke so looking to see if it is open wont tell u much. Take a pocket screw driver and move it to see if it is free. Is that piece you found magnetic? 2-3 shift valve is on the same end as manual valve but on opposite side.

Think we're going to pull it, throw in a good used one, and work on fixing this one up. Challenge accepted.

Not to derail but we're really lucky to have someone like Mark on here to help us out.
