Doing some more investigation into the 5R110 tranny...I see quite a bit of mention about upgrading to the 08+ pan and filter. What are the advantages of doing this? That I can't seem to find.

Thanks
Dave

The filter in the pan is much larger.

Pan P/N 8C3Z-7A194-B
Filter P/N 8C3Z-7A098-D

So I take it you put the 08 pan on so that the better filter fits?
Thats right. The new filter won't fit with the stock pan. You should also look into installing the Dougs direct clutch solenoid when you do the pan and filter. It'll help your tranny live longer if you're tuned by delivering 100% more fluid to the clutch packs.

Do you have a link to this direct clutch solenoid?

I believe you can use the 08+ filter in the Mag-Hytech pan. I saw a write up on this somewhere. I'll see if I can't dig it up.

Gotcha. Wasn’t sure if it was the same one you were talking about or not. Thanks.

From doing some diggin I think I found my answer. The 08+ pan is wider to accommodate the wider filter.

The a/m pan is said to not really have any benifit other than prolonging warm up. The 08+ pan is simply larger to accommodate the filter. There is not performance benefit past filtration 100% of the time vs the 03-07 only filtering when the temp alows the fluid to bypass

It usually takes my tranny 2 mins of idle time and 2 miles of driving to be up to temp. So I can't really see a few more minutes being bad.

Is that by a actual gauge or the dummy gauge on the dash? It takes mine a while longer than that to come to optimal operating temps. Even towing 8-10k in 100+* texas heat my tranny in my 04 and the 06 never break 190* driving 70-80mph thru decent hills in the hill country. I just can't see how you can justify 8+ additional quarts of $5 tranny fluid for no reason. If however you can justify it get the 08+ filter since you will likely not be getting the tranny into the 160-180* area where the pump allows the fluid to go thru the by pass filter that was originally installed in the 03-07 trucks.
