6.4 Issues & High HP Questions

guys im not real farmilar with these 6.4s but they have been catching my eye lately and really thinking about buying one and having some fun with it.

i have a good friend who is a ford diesel tech. He has told me in the past that these trucks are having the following issues

front case cavitation
radiator leaking
egr systems clogging
fuel systems failing
cam shafts failing
DPF filiters clogging

well i know you delete the dpf and do a egr delete thats the easy thing. but i know some trucks on here have a bunch of motor money put into them im currious what they are doing to fix the other issues. And i know that there are fuel systems out there to run so thats not a big deal.

are you replacing stock cams with the after market ones available?
what about the front case caviating issue?

You shouldn't even have to get that far into the motor to make it reliable. At most all you would need to do is studs.
A coolant bypass filter would be good for preventing the cavitation, but I don't think it's needed.

Lower rpm always help the front cover.

Must fuel system issues is from contamination. Air dog or something similar should help that.

Never really heard of cam issues tho...

Radiators do leak and they are expensive... No good fix that I know of just yet.

I've only heard of the cavitation issues on the 450 and 550s because the gearing is so low, 4.30 and 4.88, which make the motor rev high. Never heard of cam issues either.

We had an F350 with 4.10s come in last year that had bad cavitation from the water pump. The truck had 70k miles on it.

yeah they are less than desired as they are stamp, big valve springs or high back pressure will break them, no replacements yet

When I talked to Geoff from Colt Cams he said that he sees a few cam lobes break on both the 6.0 and 6.4. He also said that it is repairable thou, I've seen some of the cores with new lobes built up and reground to the needed profile, he's been doing this repair for 25 years with no failures. So yes cams fail but it's not a huge issue. Don't let a few isolated incidents keep you from a truck.

I have an aftermarket cam and so do others, from Elite. I didn't put it in because I was fearing the stock one would fail though. Colt cams is another good one.

I would say go for it especially since your buddy is a tech. He will be able to do a lot work on the truck without ford knowing about it...haha
