6.7 primary coolant consumption

Got 2 trucks in our shop that are using coolant. Have pressure tested both trucks and there are no external leaks found. One is a 2011 other is a 2016. Both company trucks that do a lot of hauling and highway driving. Both trucks are dleted, both exhaust and egr. Anybody seeing headgasket issues with tuned work trucks? I’ll probably hook up our pressure gauge and take each for a cruise and see if they build pressure soon. Neither appear to be puking though.

I’ve seen instances of heads cracking inside the intake runners causing coolant consumption. But the 2011 had heads replaced last year by their company mechanic.

May require tear down to find the cause.
Each are using 1 gallon every 1000 miles or so.

Have you checked the oil for coolant? May be something simple like a turbo gasket. I haven’t seen many head gasket issues on these, but if someone else had changed heads on one, it could be an install issue..

After leaving the 2016 pressurized all night and starting it this morning it started white smoking and smells like coolant. So it’s got something going on that require tear down.

2011 wouldn’t surprise me if it’s an installer issue after seeing the quality of work.

Pulled each up pipe off the see if one exhaust manifold was more wet than another. The left hand side had dried coolant built up around the edges. So I pulled the left valve cover off and found coolant inside #7 intake runner. Pressurized the system and left it overnight. The next morning I could see coolant had pooled up in the bottom. Couldn’t see up inside the runner enough to locate the crack. Ended up replacing both heads cab on. Really not too bad of a job. I really like working on these 6.7’s they’re quite simple. Enjoy some pics

Nice find man. You’re right, they ain’t too bad, but the 32 push rods piss me off though. Real pain in the ass to get everything lined up right.

It depends what mood I'm in for cab lifts. Specialty body with a dead crane... Sheeet.. Just busted a back window out tryna navigate around it...

Got one now that's dropped off they took engine out the front and debating stuffing new one right back in without cab lift just cause.

Mostly because I needed to figure out the source before pulling cab and by that time I was halfway tore down so I decided to go ahead with it.

We got the 2011 f550 truck in the shop this week and found signs of coolant in the exhaust manifold and up pipe. This truck has a bd turbo kit so the exhaust manifold isn’t stock. Appeared to be coming from cylinder 8 exhaust port. So this truck will be getting a set of heads as well. The customer had previously replaced the heads because of cracked valves with the absolute cheapest Chinese parts they could find so thats what I’m blaming it on.

Plan on sending the head in to get checked to see maybe where it's cracked?

If that 16 with coolant shooting out the manifold comes back I'm Def having it checked. Seems it's a problem.

Local machine shop I use says they don’t have a way to check aluminum for cracks. It’s already boxed back up for core credit.

I had one put 21 psi in cooling system and over night would hydrolock.

I removed egr feed pipe and while engine was running I could put psi to cooling system and the exhaust stream would start puffing out coolant.

Customer declined repair.
