The demand for them is gone. That's what I believe I don't think it's bc they don't hold or can't make them hold it just wouldn't be worth the time to develop a manual and auto truck when nobody wants to buy the manual or half he people now days don't know how to drive them. I'm not trying to start a pissing contest just what I'm thinking. Sorry for the derail

Morgan is trans builder and a sledpuller. That post wasnt opinion.

The swap sound like a good way to *** up a perfectly good truck. I never get why people go manual swaps. Some people still think it's more macho to shift your own gears.

The demand being gone is true as well. Could one be made to hold, yeah, but not without being a totally different trans that is so large and cumbersome that it's not feasible. An eaton 7 speed can only take 750 FTlbs in a f750. And it's huge.

Almost all the medium duty and Otr trucks are going auto as well. There is a reason for that too. The autos are becoming more reliable, more efficient and more cost effective. Enough to make a manual option obsolete in the very near future.

Forgot that they can only hold 650 FTLBS so even if you install a south bend? thats rated at 650 HP? so my 7.3 is making 400 HP 800 LBS It would just twist that transmission in half then? LOL

Yeah if you had a constant load behind your truck...... I mean a real load. Not a few sheets of ply wood

I drove a 6.4 with a factory zf6 the other day. Truck was stock so it shifted like butter. From what I understand it is the same as the zf behind the 6.0, including clutch. And those with big clutch and power suck for anything but sled pulling.

A zf 5-6 whatever WILL NOT hold continuous power that a stock 6.7 can dish out. There is NO aftermarket shafts, syncro's or anything else out there to make a zf 5-6 any better than in stock form. The only gain over as auto trans would be for a competition sled pulling vehicle where you only want one gear, running for short periods of time, low range in the transfer case and need 4000+ rom to spool a large competition turbo.

All preferences aside no BS just the facts a zf 5-6 conversion would be very costly, slower and less reliable than a stock 6r any day of the week at all power levels from stock on up. They were designed to hold 650 input FTlbs of torque not 890 our of a stock 6.7. A 6.7 would eat it alive over not too many miles if towed heavy.

The zf trans is not cooled the same (3.5 quarts fluids capacity compared to 12+ quarts in most all the autos) as the auto. It will get hot and melt under high loads and high stress applications.

Morgan.. Good post. I agree completely.

The one thing that really jumped out to me was the part highlighted in green.
Was that a mistake or is that what the new 6.7L is going to be rated for??

You guys can say all you want but me and several others have not only owned ZF5's and 6's, we've owned them behind every powerstroke ever made. I've rebuilt all the zf's. I can tell you they will hold immense power for short periods of time, like a sled pull. But they will be destroyed by a high hp truck daily driven hard or raced.

I personally owned a 7.3 that made consistent 9 sec passes (1/8th mile) with a zf6 being a cclb dually (8000 lbs) at that. I think I know what they can handle and what tears them apart. I also have a zf6 currently in my pull truck that makes over 1000hp at the flywheel..... So before all the wise cracks about how "bad" your 7.3 is, please think about the source of the information that has been given first.

The zf's had a place back in the day, but know all it would do is hinder a new truck. It would be a novelty that would force you to give up all the nice things that they can do from the factory with a 6r.

Morgan speaks for me on this. I lol'd at the trans cooling statement made in here.

When I was growing up, my dad owned a custom ag/otr rim and tire business. Shipping was done in house. All with new ford every year or two. Every single one had a zf-whatever trans behind it. They towed heavy all the time. Never was there a day the job was easy on those trucks. Regardless, I saw first hand those transmissions spit their guts out 3-4 times a year. Everything possible to be done was, from custom made trans coolers with inline pumps too treated internals, and beyond. Not one was any better than the other. Synchros are nobodies friend... Swapping out a stout auto that can handle the power and payload the truck offers for something that couldn't handle half the ratings across the board on its best day, seems a tad silly, borderline stupid. That's just my opinion though.

I absolutely agree 100% I thought Manuals were always stronger but not behind powerhouses like our trucks.
