I recently bought a 1996 7.3l with a lot of upgrades done and instead of the oil cap on the valve cover, it has galvanized pipe running up out of it with a breather hose attached to it. Is there a purpose for doing that when building a performance diesel?

New to the forum so thanks for any replies!

I was thinking the same thing...... Oh and there are much nicer ways to do a breather than that.

@ghohouston isn't there also a breather in the drivers side valve cover that goes into the intake?

@97f350stroker it's got stage 2 injectors, propane injection, cold air intake, banks power chip, and a bully dog performance kit (don't remember what that includes, but I've got a whole stack of receipts to go through for these upgrades) and it has a giant aftermarket inter cooler

Hope you didn't buy it on the hope that it was a 600hp rig because I'm guessing your shy of hitting even the 350 mark. Not trying to be a dik or anything just sayin.

oh and ditch that propane asap

In that case ditch the banks chip also. Find out who built the injectors and get either a ts style chip or a php hydra and get some custom tunes.

Yes, but I would figure the previous owner would have blocked it off. If not, they are retarded, but with what's on there already, they obviously didn't know much about diesel performance.

Well It doesn't look like it's blocked off, I'm tearing into this truck right now, typing with oily fingers, and it seems like that breather is still functional. Think I can get away with going back to original oil cap?

Lulz, i noticed the same things. Stock fuel bowl, looks like a stock turbo with a E99 spyder, and a horrid looking CCV set-up. And whats with that valve in the heater core line?

I think the valve is the "ice cold a/c mod" or "max a/c" mod, or whatever its called. To keep hot coolant from going through the core during summer.

No clue what that valve in the heater line is for, I've seen other trucks with them but my 97 didn't have them. Just picked this truck up a week ago because it was a hell of a lot nicer than the one I was driving, and found that crap pile of galvanized pipe not even mounted into the valve cover securely, burned wires to my under valve cover harness, broken drain line to the fuel bowl, and then the cam position sensor crapped out.

Related note: anyone know where I can find an engine harness? No place sells them and my local dealership is a pain in the ass. And also what does CCV stand for? Totally drawin a blank there
