Hey guys,

A buddy of mine asked if I could replace his 7.3 HPOP, he's short on $ to have someone do it. I found some instructions online, but they were pretty vague. I am a 6.0/ 6.4 guy and rarely do work on 7.3's. Do you guys have any tips, and do I need special tools? This will be my first 7.3 HPOP.

Thanks!

It can go anyway. And I am x2 on the gasket. There are 3 different gasket for the 7.3 94.5-97, and 2 others. The 2 other one, one has a filter and the other doesn't.

It is used to remove the hpo lines from the fittings. You will need something like that to remove the lines if you have to return your old pump as a core. Most places require you return the fittings with the core.

takes 5 minutes to make.
1/8" x 1" x 8" flat bar, drill 7/16" < 1/2" hole centered in one end, clean up burrs slide under fitting and pop off the line.

OP remove cam gear before unbolting pump from front cover.

He shouldn't have to worry about the reservoir gasket if he is only removing the HPOP. Make sure you drain the reservoir of oil using a MityVac or something or you will have a big mess in the valley when you pull the HPOP. I don't remember if you have to remove the fuel bowl to physically get the HPOP out. I haven't had a fuel bowl in years.

Pull the HPO lines.
Disconnect IPR connector.
Remove HPOP gear access cover.
Remove bolt from gear and pull gear forward and let it sit in there. Don't worry it won't fall anywhere.
Two bolts hold the pump on. Remove them and HPOP should be free.
Swap over your IPR and reinstall. I usually use a new gasket but some people are cheap. LOL

You do have to remove the fuel bowl to get the hpop out. I just did mine a month ago. As far as the "tool" goes is that only for the guys that have quick connects? Because like I said mine screwed on.

Well, seeing as how this is the SuperDuty section, and the title of the thread is '99 HPOP replacement, I would be willing to bet he has Quick connects.

BTW, I took mine off with a big screwdriver.

dare it be asked whyyyy the hpop is being replaced?

from where I sit...the pump either starts the truck or it doesn't...and 99.9% of the time..the pump isn't the problem on a no start..much much more likely to be a faulty IPR or inj o-ring or inj issue if the truck isn't making enough HPOil to fire...

Could be an upgrade maybe. It don't have to be broke to replace it.
