I’ve found that there are really two causes for the chronic leaks at the 7.3 thermostat housing to water pump joint.

The first is the weak mounting flange on the stamped steel housing. It’s not strong enough to securely clamp the joint without bending. This bending of the flange causes a leak by not applying enough clamping force to the sealing o-ring.

The second is the poorly conceived square cut sealing o-ring that Ford/Navistar used. It easily rolls over on itself causing a large leak. So, reinforcing the housing flange alone does not entirely eliminate the potential for leaks. In fact, I’ve found that the added clamping force actually causes the stock square cut o-ring to more easily fail. That’s why you often see folks with a billet housing still battling coolant leaks.

With this kit, the stainless steel ring effectively reinforces the stock housing flange, which results in greatly improved clamping of the new style fail proof o-ring. This kit is the only solution that addresses both issues with this problematic joint and effectively stops it every time the first time.
