I bought my 1997 with 100k miles and was in great shape the problem was that there was a superchip program on my truck. It was fine til winter and I looked into my chip to have the "stock" option. So when I called and talked about the chip I was informed that the dp tuner would over ride the superchip which made it nice for winter driving. Now I learned how to drive it in race anyways.

And about the trucks falling in 100 and up settings could be related to fuel supply. With stock lift pump it wont do the pressure required from chip.

And change fuel filter often. I change mine every oil change a restricted / dirty filter causes lots of problems.


I'm at 40k miles now with my do tuner and never had any problems. Besides fuel bowl heater.

Are there any tuners that can stop an E4OD's converter from unlocking (then locking again) during the OD shift?

i know matt at gearhead locks the converter and it does not unlock till you slow to a certain speed, hit the brakes or if the trans downshifts on its own when slowing

Thats how my truck is, or should i say was stock. It'd lock up at 32 mph and would stay locked up until 20ish. One time running through down i lugged it so low that the battery light came on. LOL Wouldn't unlock unless i hit the brakes or it downshifted slowing down. Now i have the problem of it not locking at all. :mad:

mine wouldnt do that stock. as soon as you let off the throttle it would unlock.

Yep, every time i start making progress and am ready to order do more mods it decides to break. This last time it was the converter that let go, and so far its been 8 weeks and i still don't really feel like fixing it. Don't wanna dump another $3-4k in it along with my time just to pay outrageous prices for diesel when i have a super basic and reliable gasser that never needs worked on, and gas prices are dropping.

On another note, lets talk about the basics of tuning. What software do the top tuners use? I'd imagine everybody uses Minotaur, but is there any other tuning programs out there other than that and Sniper?

I can start it off, obviously i had a reason to make this thread.

How come some tuners still say on their webpage that 94-97 trucks need a boost fooler above 36 psi? Is that really true, ive never even thought of having one because most say its "tuned out" or not needed with custom tunes.

Also what in the tuning deals with WOT shifting, seems as though my truck shifts awesome until i go WOT and then im bouncing off limiters and getting real crappy shifts.

In my experience different code PCM's react different to "overboost" My ALF4 needs a boost fooler. I have DP Tuner tunes and it acts just like this:

Got one for ya'll. Just got my beans tune back and when under wot at a higher speed and rpm, the truck defuels massively. It slows the truck hard enough to throw me forward. Some may say its the HPOP but there is no way, not unless it would completely fail then come to.

I thought I blew it up the first time it happened! And I was just passing a 6.0 at the time..... Boost fooler fixed it.

I have a TDE1 pcm with programming fro Cale at Tyrant and I have seen nearly 50 psi. with no fooler and no problems or lights.

It is interesting you bring this up. I helped Jody (read driver) work on some fresh tuning for the OBS trucks last year. We used a very low mileage OBS truck that was in great shape and really worked on the shifting. We also spent a bunch of time creating tunes designed for mountain driving where the upshift/downshift points are closer. After a couple of days of work I thought it was really dialed in. I have other friends that run those tunes and they really like them and Jody has lots of customers that do as well.

I tried those tunes in my truck and guess what? It will not shift at WOT and hits the rev limiter. All of the shift points are off by a bit like 3mph higher. We had come across this before where my truck does not shift at the comanded MPH like trucks normally do. I was wondering what was going on here and if it had to do with my BTS.

We tried an experiment and I put one of my spare PCMs in the truck. Magically now those tunes that would not shift at WOT now work just fine. Something in my PCM has a small effect to the shifting to where it does not exactly do what the programming on the chip commands. I am not sure if it is some kind of firmware in the PCM not addressed with a PCM base code or what. My stock PCM is a NAW4 that has been reflashed to a TDE1 code. The test PCM I used was from a 97 truck and was a NAW6 code.

Jody was able to address the issue with pretty quickly by lowering the shift points the proper and amount and then driving it a bit but it was really interesting that this happened. I think he said he has only had a couple of cases where this occurred. Maybe your truck is like mine and is the oddball one. It would be easy to blame the tuner if you ordered a chip and this happened but the real issue is with the truck/PCM not acting like the normal. If you have a spare PCM you might want to try this just to see.

i wish i had a spare pcm, if i find one to try does it need to be the same code? I think im TDE1 right now, i asked cale tonight to spread out my rev limiter and shift point, we will see if that helps

thanks for the info its kinda annoying that i cant take full use of my extreme tune. maybe my lift pump is gettin weak? maybe its time for e-fuel system.lol

its your 15* HPOP. That fuel pump will be fine, not ideal, but fine.

I just put a 17* on a truck with stage 1s, it used to be faster on level 5 since it was loosing so much ICP. But now with the new pump it pulls really hard in 6 and doesnt ever fall off

The boost fooler deal is a truck to truck basis thing. One truck will wig out when it goes over a certain boost # where the next will do as much boost as you want and never hiccup.


This is what we see on a daily basis and is a tuning nightmere. EVERY TRUCK IS DIFFERENT! I dont care if you have two truck of the same year, make, model, mods, DPC, everything the same the tunes never seem to work the same. Weather its shifting, startup, pedal feel, boost# etc there will be something different. We have live tuned alot of trucks here and that helps to try and refine the tunes and find the wierd problems that we can incorporate the fixs in future tunes but sometimes there will still be a truck that will not take tunes, the same tunes that worked on a 100 other trucks just like it.

Moral of the story is dont get mad at your tuner when you get your chip in and it doesnt act right. Its just the nature of the beast and you will need to let them work with you to get it right or the best option is get it live tuned and be done.

Can you quickly tell me if youve had any complaints on 1-2 or 2-3 shifts with a built (BTS) trans and 500-600 HP? My truck pulls extremely hard, but getting it to shift and shift with a passion is another story. TDE1 pcm code, and from the sounds of things they are one of the more difficult to tune possibly?

No we have had no problems with big power and A BTS. We have trucks making 550-650 with no problems.

Have you talked with brian?

I dont believe its the transmission, but then again its possible! I have been trying to get ahold of Brian for a couple days now... It only happens when i do boosted launches, and once it does shift its awesome.

Cale told me it was probably tuning, ive got some new files to mess with that play with shifting strategies and line pressures

I can certainly agree with what Ryan is saying here. I do not know why they tend to have a mind of their own but they do. I have driven trucks that have the same mods and the exact same tune that is in my truck and each truck has a personality all its own.

The best time to get through to Brian that I have found is around 8:30 am central time.
