What is the forward drum? I was assuming that you all were talking about what I call the OD planet carrier. If so.... why does this break so much? I've only broken one, and I peeled the splines out of it and cracked it in half all the way through. When this happened though, I heard a whining sound when I dropped the trans in gear.

If the OD planet and forward drum are the same, why doesn't he hear a whine? If they are not.... then what the hell is a forward drum?

I feel like an exploded view is in order.

Foward drum...

Broke two of them... spun the splines right out of them.

Here are two exploded diagrams I could find.

Didn't mess with the truck this weekend, was busy moving. My plan is to pull the trans and see where I am at from there. If the shaft is in one piece then I would be looking at the forward drum, which based on the diagrams looks like a lot of the trans would need to come apart to get at it. At that point I will have to decide if I tackle it myself or take it somewhere.

For you guys that have stripped the splines out of the drum, did you have any indication before it went? Any other symptoms before hand or signs? Like I said my trans experience is limited, but to me it would seem like if you were to spin the splines out of something that it wouldn't just happen all at once under a relatively light load situation. I could see under a heavy load or boosted launch or something similar. I'm just picturing breaking a few and it giving some indication of an issue but hanging on for a while until they all go, but like I said I don't know, and you guys have been through it, just wondering if there were signs I missed leading up to it going out.

As far as the input shaft, I was thinking the same thing, that it wouldn't just snap under a light load situation, but I could see it stressing/cracking but still holding together until it had enough to completely go.

Thanks for all the input, and hopefully I can get some time to pull the trans here soon.

First one I broke was under heavy load and a shift...

Second one I broke was empty, one wheel peel in some cinders left on the road, when it hooked up, it unhooked. LOL

Those are the kind of situations I could see it letting go all at once. Both of those equate to a quick hard load on the parts. Where as in my case I was just easing along slowly accelerating from a slow down at a light, low boost, low rpm shift. That's why I was thinking I would have had some indication before hand of splines trying to strip during a higher stress situation, like at the track or getting on it and spinning on a shift etc.

Mine was a little higher in the R's but it wasnt anything to extreme, and the splines fit together so perfect that the only way it could go is all at once

Makes sense, one of those things where having it in your hands and seeing it helps I'm sure, trying to picture how it all matches up in my head leaves me guessing on stuff.

In my experience, my trans has always been great, great, great, great...... then I'm walking.

Nothing in between. No slipping, no slamming, no banging, just everything good, great, grand, then nada...

One of the times I broke the center out of the converter it was at maybe 1/16th throttle when it stopped pulling. Easing away from a stop sign, and then just free-revving.

Everything else has been on a 3-4 shift. That one's ugly on a trans. Full power, full boost and lotsa hookup at those speeds.

Also, looking at those diagrams, it would appear that the forward drum and the OD planet are pretty much on opposite ends of a huge stack of sh*t. Nowhere near one another.

I wonder what Brian did to my forward drum that I have never had a minute's trouble out of it?

Reverse is gone also, but it does hold in park ( i figured it would but i dont know what actually holds it in park to know if that indicates anything).

here is a pic of what park looks like, this is in the extention housing in the ass end of the trans, pretty simple, first pic is in park, second is out of park

Thats where my experience has been different. I have had signs leading up to the final nail in the coffin. Which is why this took me by surprise.

It's all that **** in front of the drum that has me hoping its the input. That is all the stuff I get nervous about messing with and would rather pay a professional, just not a great time to be paying for trans work.

Whatever Brian did to yours i would like to know as well if i am going to be replacing it, unless you have just been lucky with it. I haven't searched much on it but I havent come across an upgraded drum of any kind.

After seeing that, I think I will be using my parking brake from now on.
