I hear ya now. That makes very clear sense to me. Ive never had thermostat issues on anything beaides two ford trucks. My 00 that is/was in my sig and my 01 ranger with the 4l. Both had the same issue the sucker was open and the trucks wouldnt heat up.

Now onto a different point. You think that running the truck that hot to cook the cups out of the heads does damage in other areas?

The thermostat makes perfect sense. I'm going to yank hopefully tomorrow and see what happens. Hoping that it is the ticket!

Could be, but the almighty 7.3 laughs at abuse. It is a cheap first step.

Ok pulled the thermostat. Still seems to be building excessive pressure. Enough to bulge the upper hose. Oil is low. Pretty sure it was full, going to top it off and keep and eye on it, but does oil in the anti-freeze have anything to do with the overheating and pressure in the system? Haven't had a chance to test drive yet since the stat was pulled but will try to yet this evening.

Went and drove approx 10 miles real quick this evening. It did not overheat. Before it would overheat in less than 5 miles. Going to try a good 30 or so mile trip tomorrow and see what happens. Thinking that pulling the thermostat may have done the trick. Thanks guys

I'd say replace your bulging heater hose, it's obviously weak. Certainly not the root cause of your issues, but it's certainly a weak point now. 'specially if it's been stressed like that repeatedly. Hopefully you've got it figured out!

Throw it in a pan of water and boil it. See if it opens before the water boils. If it does not, replace it. And the upper hose. Get the hose that goes around it.
