heat the shaft with a torch, and bend it so it clears.

might need to make a new one thats longer, to account for how far your going to need to bend it.

we did this on a floor shifter we had once upon a time, to make room for cb's, plow controls, and various things that we put down there on the floor, in a nice clean box.
