Interesting stuff. It is crazy to watch the ever evolving world of motor oil. Lets just hope oil that works well for HEUI stays around. These engines are a little more oil picky than others.

I'll hopefully be calling you later this week for a pail of 8700. Going to run that for 5k and then probably switch to LE 5-40. Just want to get all the junk cleaned out on the 15-40 before going to the more expensive stuff.

no sense in going to 8854 in a 7.3 if you are going with 8700... maybe a couple oci in winter but that's it.. 15w40 will hold icp better.

I plan on doing one around 5k. Driving a lot of highway these days so they'll go on quick. However with that is going to come more idle time to warm up.

I switched to LE about 3 months ago. I went with the 5w-40. You say the 15w40 holds icp better? Maybe I'll go with the LE 15w40 next time see if it makes a difference.

It will hold ICP better at wot. I usually recommend it first. If I didn't in your case I apologize. I'm usually pretty annoying about explaining all that stuff. But, you may give up cold start smoothness. Depending on your climate. So it's a balance.

So the 15w40 has better cold idle characteristics?

The other way around, in heui engines. The 5-40 cold starts better, but you give up ICP hot. 8800 15-40 is a good happy medium as its cold start characteristics are better than most 15-40s but hold ICP petter than any 5-40. All 5-40s are a little lower viscosity at operating temp than 15-40. It's just the nature of how they get those oils to do that spread. And all 15-40s are higher vis at lower temps.
Basically this is just important in heui, in non heui the difference is really only important in very cold temps like below-20 and in very high power applications.

No worries Pal. I'm just trying different oil's at this time to see if I see any difference's. I have an oscillating idle at OPT, but cold it idles great. I'm sure it's due to some tuning issue's. I like synthetics as well, they seem to do the best in my trucks. I usually run 5w-40 from Schaeffers, but thought I'd give LE a try. Out here in CA I could run a 40w year round and not have any issues. I've actually thought about it, I just haven't tried it yet.
