I'd like to get you guys input on a little build I have going on. I'm building an F450 basically from the ground up, and by that I mean I pretty much started with nothing and have been buying parts and assemblies from here and there, a lot of Craigslist!!! ....I found a 2010 F450 4x4 with low miles a guy bought just for the engine and transmission, after he took what he needed I bought the rest of it from him. Now the gearing is pretty steep being some 4.88s, but I'll be running the 6R140 along with a gearvendor attached to the back of the transfer case so there's that!!! I have a gearvendor on my 2002 F350 4x4 with 4.10s and absolutely love this thing!!! All these years and it's been problem fee!!!! Anyways, along with the 4.88s I'll be running a bit taller tire, some 245/70R19.5s (33.5") apposed to the stock size 225/70R19.5s (32"). I mention this as going to need to decide on the turbos, yes turbos!!! I want compound this bitch!!! Not looking to make a race truck out of this by any means as it's main purpose will be to tow my 48' gooseneck race car trailer and my 35' gooseneck boat trailer, that along with the boat of course!!! So the question is, with this steep gearing, for the high pressure turbo should I use a VGT or should I go with a non VGT??? Now of course I would like for this thing to be as responsive as possible!!! I guess I'm wanting my cake and to eat it too, I mean who doesn't these days??? So with all that being said, I'd like to get some opinions from you guys who have a lot of experiance with these oil burners. Oh yeah, one other detail, this engine will not have the stock whimpy rods, I am going with some brand new 6.0 rods along with ARP rod bolts. I'm going this route as I just can't justify spending $3500 for a set of billet rods on an engine that's not going to be used as a drag racer. It has been said, when done right the 6.0 rods in a 6.7 are good for up to 750hp and I don't feel the need to push this thing anywhere pass that. I more after torque than anything else, but I'd still like to have some decent power as well!!! You know how we want it "ALL" these days!!! Anyways, what would be the two best turbos for this application??? And yes, I will be going with dual fuel pumps just as well.... Any thoughts, concerns???

And to add to this, not turbo related, but knowing how these F450s ride like **** with no load, I've been busy building my own custom fourlink rear suspension with dual air bags on each side....Once I'm done with the rear I'm going to be converting the front coil springs to air bags just as well. Trying to get this thing to at least ride as well as my current F350 CC DRW 4x4.. If I can get it anywhere as close to this one or if I'm lucky a tad bit better, I'd be a happy camper for sure!!! And the interior of this truck is getting a full treatment also!!! I've got a late model Platinum dash with the provisions for the 8" screen. I have yet to purchase all the sync 3 stuff just yet, but I have found a guy locally who says he can supply me with it all and get it all programmed and working as it should. When done, I hoping this truck will look just like a brand new 2016 inside and out!!! And the best part is, it'll be all paid for!!! As nice as they are, I just can't see spending 70k plus on a new truck, but that's just me!!!

Ok, and now for some turbo opinions please??? To VGT or not to VGT??? And sizes of both would be very much appreciated as well!!! :naughty:

I guess I forgot to mention the engine, I was lucky enough to find a 2011 6.7 that had some issues... The guy that I bought it from buys and sells cars and trucks. Anyway the story was, he purchased a truck from an action that had some issues and rather than trying to fix it they just pulled the whole damn thing and replaced with another one..Now I bought the complete engine, transmission and transfercase from this guy for only$1700!!! It was running when they pulled it, but running rough. And when I said complete, I mean with everything, the complete engine with all the accessories, along with the wiring harness, all the way back to the transfer case!!! Now I got this home and started tearing into it and didn't take long to find out the problem. It looks like it dropped an exhaust valve on one of the passenger side cylinders. Well of course it tore up that head but luckily the cylinder is not too bad. It's going to get complete rebuild with all new pistons, 6.0 rods, the crank will receive the proper machining to accept the 6.0 rods, re-heat treated of all the rod journals and then all of if balanced. I bought some brand new improved 2015 cylinder heads from no other than Sunrise Ford, for only $950 for two brand new heads!!! Man that was a pleasant surprise for sure!!!! I've yet to purchase the pistons as of yet, but those will be Mahle with the ceramic coated crowns...It's going to get head studs and maybe go as far as o'ringing it as well, just not too sure on that one just of yet!!! But anyways, the engine should be better than new and the Transmission will get a full build as well!!! So there's all that!!!! Hopefully when it's all done I'll have me a nice truck that should serve my purposes for many, many, many years to come!!!! And I'll be selling my low mileage (just turned 90k) super nice 2002 Lariat 7.3 F350 CC DRW 4x4 with gearvendor. I'll have to see, but I've been told I should be able to get somewhere near 25k for my truck!!! I don't know, but we'll see!!! I do know there's some guys out there who just love these 7.3s and to find to them this nice with such low miles is starting to be harder and harder to find. And it's a Texas truck and the underside of it looks almost like new, very, very clean!!!! But I'm not going to need two of them so when the F450 is near completion this one will go to a new owner!!! :fordoval:

6.0 rods in a 6.7 block?

Yeah, this is what was done before the billet rods became so available. It takes a little doing, but definitely doable and works well!!! They are much, much more beefier than the 6.7 rods, plus I'll be fitting them with some ARP rod bolts as well....

Once I get to the building of the engine part I'll share that with you guys....

You said responsive as possible so you answered your own question. Vgt.

And if so, it sure would be nice to have the engine brake function, if at all possible??? But then there's there's that back pressure deally as well??? It's hard wanting cake and eating too!!!! Or maybe not!!!

Still accepting opinions...

Exactly, you can keep your engine brake.

You can add a Wastegate IF drive pressure is an issue.

Medicine Hat... Again
But would I need a 66 with a big brother off to the side kicking him right in the ass??? :naughty: You know, that little compound thingy I mentioned???

I was just saying that you could run a biggish single with your gearing and still be responsive

Since you want to keep the engine braking. I guess vgt is the way to go.

This is truck is going to be a bastard for sure!!! The Frame along with the front and rear axles are from that 2010 I purchased. Parts of the cab off that 2010 used on a 2002 crew cab in order to make the late model dash and all the pass thru wiring harnesses work as factory. And then the engine, transmission and transfer case are all from the 2011.

Now I know, WHY THE HELL, right??? It's simple, I fear the day will come where Texas will become much like California and a few other states where they will start emission testing our diesel trucks like they currently do late model cars. Since the early 2003 and previous year trucks came with no emissions at all, well then they will forever be exempt!!! I wanted all of the creature comforts of a late model super duty along with the super badassness of the 6.7 along with the 6R140 and never have to worry about suffocating that bitch with all that *** and all the other crap!!!

Yeah it's a bit of work, but hey, it's also a lot of fun and challenging just as well!!!! Since there are so many of these trucks have been built since 1999 the parts are really rather cheap!!!! For me, it's better way to go than getting in debt for 70k or so!!! The only really downfall is insurance for the truck, I'm going to have to get some kinda of special insurance to cover it n case of a fire, theft or some **** like that!!! But thankfully there's insurance companies that insure stuff like this.....

Oh yeah, you're absolutely right about that!!! And then again, maybe with that in mind I won't even need to compound it.... This is why I've come to you guys for ya'lls input!!!! And it's all very much appreciated as well!!!!

I don't think there's a gear vendor unit available for the 6r. At least a year or so ago when I called they didn't offer anything. Might want to check into that.

Yeah, that I do need to do. But I do have my 6R140 here with the transfer case attached to it, I'm going to see how the transfer case is compared to the one attached to my 4R100. If need be I can have an adapter plate made to make it work. It's really pretty simple how it attaches to the transfer case. But now thinking about it, it could be that the coupler is different as well, just depending on the splines. But it would be nice if they would get to work on offering it for these trucks as the gearvendor works extremely well!!! For my 2002 F350 it was the best $3200 I ever spent on this truck!!!

Just so you know, a lot of states that have emissions make you comply to the year of the Vehicle or the year of the motor. Being the motor is out of a 2011, you will be required to pass emissions for a 2011.

That may very well be the case but thankfully that's not how it is down here in Texas.... They go by the year of the vehicle specifically... As a matter of fact all they do is go by the vin of vehicle and that's it!!! I suppose this is just another perk of living in this state!!! :clapping:

Those tcases are completely different and bolt pattern is nothing alike. Gearvendor told me they were not offering anything because the 6r essentially already has 2 overdrive gears.

That is what I was thinking. 3 overdrives would be a bit crazy I would think. If anything, refers the axles to get the cruising rpm you want. Trust me the 4.88's in the 450's get old after a while. Even with the 6 speed manual, the rpm's are still high and get annoying after a few hrs into a long trip.
