been noticing it getting progressivly sloppier over time. I think its my t case chain stretching, rear end looks new and has minimal play at the pinion, slip joint is greased etc. how hard is it to rebuild the t case. Its really bad when the tq converter is locked/ im loaded. I have to ease off the pedal to avoid the thunk of slop

Start with easy things. Raise the truck off the ground to remove load from the drivetrain and check the u-joints and carrier bearing first. Moving the yoke back and forth through the slack will let you know how much slack there is in the Transfer case. You will need a degree wheel to measure accurately. Removed the rear driveshaft, Put the truck in 4WD and see if the noise goes away.

ok will do, theres no noise while driving. ive always had a pop when coming up to a light barely moving or stopped. Sounds like something binds then lets go. I know what bad u joints sound like and thats not what the noise is. Almost like play at the output of the tcase

I have heard u-joints sound exactly like that. If you don't catch it, you will have to replace a driveshaft. Those hurt to replace.

well its been doing it the last 120k i've owned the truck....lol. The drive shaft has been to the shop before to be balanced and he said they were all fine but one. That was a while ago though. I'll give it a good run through.

Yes on bars, threw in joints for the hell of it, didn't make a difference, with the tires off the ground I do have a decent amount of back and forth play at the pinion....I just had the inspection cover off to check an oil leak and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, it's had the play before I put the bts in. I'm thinking it's the rear end
