E4od occasional slipping

Looking for a bit of info on this transmission. My boys 95 is having shifting issues, occasionally. No forward or reverse at times, and it seems to be when the Trans is cold.
Not all the time, and not consistent with the weather, but worse the colder it gets.
I haven't pulled any codes yet.
I'm thinking it's a valve issue, but not sure. It seems to shift normally when everything is warm.

My understanding is that an E4OD should move forward or backward without electronics.

So that means you would have a loss of fluid pressure.

Probably pull the pan and inspect. Maybe the filter is loose and it is sucking air? Or fluid is low?
