I'd like to see a diagram of what happens in the trans when "shift solenoid 1" is grounded, etc.

There are plenty of wiring diagrams available but I don't know what to expect behavior-wise from the PCM or transmission. Baumann engineering has some info and other forums have links to various TSBs and tech documents but I still can't find enough info to troubleshoot with (at least the way I like to troubleshoot, which invovles understanding how stuff works to start with, then breaking the system down into testable components)

I don't know enough about the sequence of operation of the trans to know if the PCM is sending valid commands and its disobeying, or if the PCM / harness ain't working right and its properly obeying bad info.

Grounding S1 solenoid applies third gear.

What year truck op? 97s get steel gears, prior to 97 they were aluminum gears.

its a 97. Builder said OD planet set was 4 pinion steel, forward set was three pinion aluminum, going back with six pinion steel. He'd only seen this failure a couple of times.

I don't know how the transmission operates internally; but I'm guessing that when it hits OD, this gearset is supposed to move and provide a ratio change instead of turning as an assembly... and since it was stuck the rapid heat increase and sluggishness I saw was due to some clutches slipping, very very rapidly.

FWIW, Truck made it to the shop on its own power, about 35 miles, with the OD cancel on. I babied it and it did heat up but not like the night of the failure.

So is the 4pinion or 6pinion steel stock then? I'm confused on that.

I agree though, I've not heard of many planetaries in these cracking.

4 pinion od planet is stock as well is the 3 pinion aluminum forward planet. forward planet usually is steel 6 pinion 97up diesel. The aluminum planets were ment for light duty.

sorry for sounding like an idiot, but 97's have the beefier steel units, so why are you guys saying aluminum?

trans has either been rebuilt before and replaced with aluminum forward planet or was a real early build and that trans got jammed in there from the factory would be my guess

This truck was ordered in 96 by the previous owner, I'm the 2nd owner and knew it since the PO took delivery. It came in as a 97. Sept 96 build date I think.

He ordered it special with cab light delete and "4x4 Off Road" decal delete. Took 6 wks to get it.

I think... i'll check the window sticker and build sheet.

All that to say, it wasn't bought off a lot... PO waited 6 wks or so for it, and it was untouched (even used motorcraft fluids) when I got it. Only problem PO had was a cps failure at 100k miles.

99.9%.

I did forget it blew the ps hose at 122k, right before I bought it. He documented everything except fuel purchases.

I got a oasis report on it somewhere, will see if I can find that.

Update.... truck has been back 5 days and is awesome again. It may be just me looking for and getting a placebo effect, but I think I had problems for a while. Truck used to shudder and shake and miss and not build boost, about 60% of the time when accelerating from a stop; and I had convinced myself it was worn injectors or fuel delivery or something.

For whatever reason, it pulls hard, will peg the boost gauge, and light the tires again.

Time to search out a guide to the operation of the e4od and decide what might have been going on.

WIW, the shop used a Superior valve body and tweaked the accumulator themselves, and this is the smoothest shifting E4OD I've ever driven. I did the tricumulator springs and the shifts were a tad quicker during the transitions but... not really harsh but a little "jarring". This guy has been building trannies for 29 yrs and so far it shows.

Dropping and putting in a trans isn't too bad, dropped my third one last night that took about two and a half hours with two floor jacks, then dropped and put in a other one this morning in 2 and a half hours, but we had a 4 post lift and a tranny jack.
