I can agree with that as well. I see guys in one thread talking about how they only push things every now and then and then in another thread boasting about how they wot everychance they get.

Others yet talking about how they romp on it whenever they leave the house on the road they live on. Can you say cold motor!?! Oil temps likely around 120f.

Sorry but I know how most 16-23 yr are on vehicles and you mix more than doubling hp in a 8-9k lb vehicle. Stuff is gonna break. It should be no surprise.

You look at other guys run many tunes but some how keep 500hp trucks alive with stock trans no head studs. They know to not hit it hard till the converter locks let of a bit at the shifts, always taking it easy until oil temps are up to full temp etc..

Then there are the giluys that when something about the engine is not running right their answer is todrive the piss out of it to se if that helps!?! I guess they think they will clean it out. Or they just keep driving it hard like kormal regardless of the pinging sound and extra smoke out the tailpipe.

My engine starts acting funny it gets limped home and parked till fixed. At the very least babied if its driven.

There is no doubt the 7.3 is not the strongest diesel out there but I agree I can see a number of these kabooms being driver/owner related.

Only thing I disagree with in this, is that while the 7.3 is not the fastest diesel, you can make a very good case for it being the strongest. I do get your point though.

I have a question about the tuning. I know that tuning plays a big part but how do you know that the tuning that we are running isn't already doing damage? Could we be hurting the motor at 1200 vs another tuner might be better at 1400? This might be another topic to start a new thread.
Thanks

Tuning cannot change the physical laws of nature. If 1200º is to hot in stock form 1200º is to hot with the best tuner (see TW) tunes on there.

While tuners can make our trucks run really, really well, they cannot change the laws of physics.

I DD with Matt's tunes and have only broken 1400* a couple of times towing my 12,500# 5er up some long grades a couple of times. I'm also pretty sure I have a boost leak. In my hot tune, running empty, I can't break 1250*.

When I go to the strip, I plug in David's chip and let her rip. I'll be buried on EGT's almost instantly, but only for a few seconds at a time ~20-30s while boosting, racing and coasting. Pretty much like Dave stated. It gets hot, but not for very long. I also try my best not to kill the truck til egt's are below at least 400*.

Tarm's posts make a ton of sense to me. Get your truck tuned up and drive it like him and Jason are saying and you have a good chance of keeping a higher HP truck alive and healthy for a long time.

My truck is a pretty decent example of being able to keep things alive. My truck was tuned with a single pos chip from 20k-240k at 100hp. Got a php custom chip and I overheated the trans with that and a 38r after 10k miles. It was my fault. I was running that sans gauges. Not enough cooler either. Now with a cheap locally rebuilt trans I'm running 175/100's. It's tuned conservatively at 400+/- 10hp. I lift during shifts. Converter is locked most of the time. I'm fairly confident if I hammered it to the floor from a stop ten times I'd be needing another trans. At 268k my truck runs great but needs a trans before anymore power is added, however, it could be driven as is for many years if not.beaten and the maintenance stays where it's been.

The 7.3 is an exceptional motor. Just not an easy powerhouse. Which holds little interest for my usage of it.

Wow... 11 pages...

IH says the sustained max for our trucks is 1250*.

This means sustained max is 1250*. You can go over that for short periods of time without damage, how long is up to you and the operating conditions.

If your crusing along at 600* and go to play/pass someone, you can hold it at 1600+ for a lot longer without damage then the guy who has been pulling all day at 1100* and goes to pass someone.

Heat soak is the problem, not a specific EGT number.

As to the tuner comments... never mind...
