Interesting. Back when I was running F550 's. We were regularly over weight on service trucks with 7,000lb cranes. Never once saw a leaf spring break like your describing with normal use. However. I can rest assure where the problem lies.
USE THE OUTRIGGERS!!!! Lol
Now. I have seen plenty of the guys break chassis components including springs when being too stinking lazy to put the outriggers down when utilizing the crane. Plenty. Matter fact we were pulling an after cooler (which weighs as much as a f250) off a 8120hp engine and I heard a loud pop from the mechanics truck. Yep. Busted a spring sitting right there. Woops. Lol.
I've watched bed bolts sheer off frames twist. List goes on and on...
IMT and AUTOCRANE put outriggers on for more than just load stability.
Just my .02 cents worth.
