Rear blocks I built for my truck.

Those look sweet! Preheat, backstep/stitch or angling in the opposite direction to compensate for distortion are all things you can try. I like the flatbar idea Lincoln suggested too. Need to try that one sometime. If you have a mill you could always mill it flat afterwards as long as you don't have to remove too much material.

thats what we had to do back in college when we where learning how to weld xray quality welds...
