fuel gauge issue

hi all

i have an 02 excursion 7.3
i am having a problem with my fuel gauge dropping to empty when i have a full tank of fuel.
im not sure if its a sending unit or the gauge its self thats going bad

this does not happen all the time

My experience has been the sender.. filled with fuel and wouldn’t float.

My 05 Excursion did this when I bought it last year. I read that there is build up on the sender card. I read to run Chevron with Techron concentrate in the fuel. I ran the big black bottle from Walmart. It took about 6-7 tanks of fuel, but it finally quit doing it and has worked normally ever since.
