Ok so I have a 1996 7.3 Auto CCDRW with 72,000 (not a typo). with 4.10s
I have a Tymar intake and 4 inch turbo back coming on the way. Stock turbo and injectors.

The question I have is gauges a must before a custom chip (still dont know who to go with btw)? I am in Florida (flat land) or does that matter? I am hooked up to a trailer sometimes....

Also how hard is it to install the pod and where/hard to hook up the boost and temp gauges? Please dont :pointlaugh: :morons: to bad!!!

Thanks

not a must but a good idea. boost, trans, and egt is what i had. i installed my boost gauge at the y under the turbo where the heater plug is. riffraff diesel makes a lil plug for a boost gauge that replaces the heater plug in this place and i put my egt sensor near the back of the driver side exhaust manifold.

On the 94-97 the heater plug is not in the Y like the 99-03. So what I have done is put a tee in the MAP line and each gauge has good directions in the box.

As far as tuners I would recommend power-struck as Justin has spot on tuning! My 1997 has never idled so smooth or ran as good as it does now. And he has the best pricing on chips. 8 position for $350 and if money is tight he has single positions available for $199! Pm here and he will give you more info.

I would actually consider gauges a necessity before/when adding any type of tuner. Really, the only gauge that is crucial is the pyrometer. When you start adding more fuel to the mix things can heat up. This is especially true if you have a boost leak or something else causing an issue. Another reason why I would consider them necessary is because you have an OBS which means it is non-intercooled(unless you have added one?). This will also play a role in EGT.

Analog gauges are really easy to install. They are fairly self-explanatory and most all of them come with instructions. I would say to give yourself an hour or two if you have never done them.

Teeing off of the MAP line is a good way to do it for boost. It is easy and requires no drilling and tapping. The trans temp sender will screw right into a port on the side of the transmission. The EGT probe is usually placed in the drivers side exhaust manifold right before the up-pipe. This will require you to drill and tap the manifold(not a hard thing to do).

Even easier to install is a digital monitor such as our Infinity. It plugs straight into the OBDII port and monitors everything the PCM sees. You will still have to drill and tap the exhaust manifold if you want to watch EGT through it though. This unit will tune as well.

HERE is a link to the Infinity if you would like to check it out.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Gauges or at least an EGT gauge is 100% a must. These trucks will run HOT with just a tuner on them, and someone that doesnt understand not to lug them will cause the most damage.

This is true. I have my 6 pos chip in my 350 tuned for pulling and I can hit 1200* easy pulling a heavy load or with a light load and a head wind. I put a 3 in 1 Glowshift gauge in my 350 to try and keep the stock look and am pretty happy with it.
