Never had a DTC. I used to brag on the fact that Fords didn't set a damn "lamp out" light and corresponding chime like my old POS Dodges would for seemingly no reason.

This is literally the first I've heard of this.

I installed two LED tail lights in my utility bed and got the fast blink, and I never did anything about it. Like I said, I actually prefer the fast blink and considered putting LED replacement bulbs in my reg cab 6.4 in order to get the fast blink

Then you simply got lucky. That's not something to brag about.

The SJB uses Field Effect Transistors (FET) to provide output to the turn signals, headlamps, parking lamps, etc. These transistors are capable of measuring current flow, which allows the module logic to determine when there is a short to ground, short to voltage, or open.

When you install LEDs into the SJB's output driver with no relay, the module determines that the bulb is out based on the low current draw. This activates the lamp outage mode and sets a DTC. The SJB has a specific fault tolerance for each DTC. After the DTC sets a predetermined number of times, the SJB will set DTC B1342 and all functions will be disabled, requiring module replacement.

So I found this on a ford fleet PDF for 08's

"LED Lighting with Smart Junction Box

Models Affected: 2008 Model Year Incomplete or Modified F250/350/450/550 completed by a Final Stage Manufacturer and to be equipped to tow a trailer

Background For 2008 model year the function of the turn signal flasher was incorporated into the software of the Smart Power Distribution Junction Box (SPDJB or SJB). The SJB is configured to provide lamp-outage indication on all F250/350/450/550.

For proper function of LED lighting installed by Final Stage Manufacturers of incomplete or modified vehicles, the SJB must be reconfigured to turn off the lamp-out indication.

Reconfiguration of the SJB Beginning the week of May 7, 2007, Ford dealers have a Special Service Message (SSM) providing instructions for reconfiguration of the SJB to turn off the lamp-out indication. Additionally, Final Stage Manufacturers can reconfigure the SJB to turn off the lamp-out indication with a laptop computer by obtaining their own IDS Kit (Integrated Diagnostic Software) sold by Ford.

Below are two areas of the Motorcraft® Technical Resource Access website for the description and ordering of tools and kits.
Diagnostic Tool Support (product detail in left hand navigation menu): http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs/retail/default.asp?pageid=wds_retail&gutsid=wds&menuIndex1=8
Tools & Equipment (how to order): http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs/retail/default.asp?pageid=pubs_rotunda&gutsid=pubs_rotunda
Up-fitters will be asked to call 1-800-ROTUNDA Option #1 to order the kits. Another option is through the Ford Fleet website, www.fleet.ford.com, if they have a FIN Code.
Once the service laptop has been obtained, and IDS installed, the following are the basic steps to turn off the lampout configuration:

1. Ensure that the IDS is updated to B48.11 Database 4. Select "Stop and tail lamp outage configuration" 2. Select "Programmable Parameters" in the IDS Toolbox 5. Select "Lamp outage turned off" 3. Select "Exterior Lighting"
Notes: 1. Reconfiguration of the SJB to accommodate LED lighting is not covered by Ford warranty. 2. FMVSS 108 / CMVSS 108 compliance (with specific regard to the turn signal bulb outage requirement per this bulletin) is the responsibility of the Final Stage Manufacturer.
For any questions contact the Ford Truck Body Builders Advisory Service by the methods shown above.

He said it could be done on 08 and up trucks because aftermarket beds are mostly using LED lights now. He also told me not all trucks will hyper flash. Some have it turned off in the rear lights from the factory.
