how fast should lube oil pressure rise? - lpop concerns after turbo failure

2002 with 70k, owned since 68k. had a turbo journal bearing failure on the exhaust side, chewed up the turbine and compressor wheels. seemed way premature to me so after installing a new turbo i decided to check oil pressure.

How fast should lube oil pressure rise? i'd like it to rise a lot faster than this, but not sure what's normal with these motors. weak lpop? cracked pickup tube? normal?

other symptoms:

1) HPOP reservoir slowly leaks down overnight to about 2 1/2" from top. is full after cranking or start, at bottom of port.
2) occasionally i will get a bit of a lope idle for 2-3 sec, only after start after parked in sun all day at work. does not do this at any other time.

once started runs fine, zero symptoms....plenty of power, runs nicely, no smoke.

checked so far:
1) by-pass check ball is free of gunk, spring is strong, seat appears clean
2) filter pressure bypass valve seems normal, wafer is present
3) oil level is good, oil has about 2k on it

still to check:
1) lpop gerotors & front cover for wear/gouges
2) if all else fails, jack rear of truck and overfill oil and observe

using the 1/8 NPT port on the aft oil cooler fitting/filter head

probably not bled, how do i do that? crack the fitting at the gauge under pressure until i get oil?

Test the gauge with shop air to see how fast it comes up. As far as bleeding the line just do as you initially thought.

If the hpop res drains down then you obviously have a slow leak somewhere with the lpo system. I have seen the same effects when someone runs rotella oil... or a cheap oil filter that doesn't have the anti drain back feature.

rotella t4 15-40, about 2k on the change. motorcraft 1995 filter.

always been confused about hpop drainback. shouldn't it only drain to the level of the standpipe if its an lpo side leak?

yes, the score at the top is deep. feel it with your fingernail and hear it if you scratch at it.

Dont think this is the issue.

Fix the bleed down in reservoir.

is that front cover really fine?

where is my reservoir oil going? injector o-rings? reservoir gasket?

The front cover is an issue, I feel, but as ctc said, its not the reason for bleed down. Injector o rings, pump, any number of things will cause it. You will need to air test it to verify where the leak is.

Id get rid of the ro****ta oil. I have seen it more than once cause a oil pressure issue with as little as 500miles on the oci.

what should i run? put 100,000 miles on my previous 7.3 all on rotella, never an issue.

VDO gauge is mechanical, couple folks said it might be a delay in the gauge so i tested it with shop air:

what would you guys do? throw on a melling and move on, or pull the motor and swap front covers?

Shop air is really not a good test to test that gauge....air vs liquid. Air travels a whole lot quicker than fluid.

Jake (lincolnlocker) has a hatred towards Rotella.

At this point, I would send in an oil sample. Also, I would try an electrical type gauge. I use the AutoMeter Ford Factory match gauges.

I agree with Jake....Rotella is Junk.

If you want cheap oil.... run Delo.

My truck is basically a yard/plow truck at this point, and I still run Amsoil... a quality synthetic makes a big difference in winter/sub-freezing temps.
