ID this oil leak

I got my parts and took the cooler out today.

and as Patrick warned, parts fell out of the back housing.... I am HOPING I found everything.

Can anyone confirm?
Looks like I have the 3 regulator parts for the back side...

But I'm concerned about the other spring and washer that is directly under the spin-on filter.... Is that all there is?? please tell me I didn't lose anything... LoL

It looks like the spring drops in then gets compressed and held by the top washer.... Also looks like that top washer was "staked" or hit with a prick punch to help stay in... ? the spring needs to be compressed a bit to get the washer on top.... pat, Yeah a snap ring would have been GREAT

after searching the web, I found that the spring and washer under the filter is the Oil Filter bypass valve ....
so if the oil filter gets clogged, the pressure opens the spring and bypasses the oil around the filter....

But the picture I found with that info looks like there is also a solid disc? under the washer (that is staked in) ??

can anyone confirm this?

I may have to carefully sift through my oil drain pan..... or under the truck somewhere.... arrggghhh

Yes you are missing the disc. The picture you found is of the updated header with the snap ring. If you found the disk (I did not on mine), you could put the parts back in and re-stake it. I ended up buying the new updated header (F81Z-6881-BA, it lists for $543.22, but can be found online for about $269). It looks like you have all the regulator parts. Cheers!

It appears to be a fiber disc.

If I cant find it, I will make one.

I shocking this did not fall out during an oil change....
Im sure there are a few 94-95 OBS’s running around with NO bypass valve !

And as a result very little or NO oil filtration.

IMO, Ford should have had a recall or at least a bulletin on this.

Anyway, easy enough to fix.

One more stupid Question:

since I'm still sitting on the couch....

The REGULATOR -
It drops in just like this picture?
body first / then inner piece/ then spring

pretty sure thats how it came out.... just want to double check.

I wonder if I should stake that also?

also, I couldn't find the DISC for the filter bypass.... looks like it should be slightly bigger (wider) than the spring ... AND just big enough to cover the hole in the middle of the top washer.....

so it can move downward if necessary.

How often does a big spin on filter get clogged or restricted anyway??

seems like probably not often..... unless something catastrophic happened in the engine ..... so your probably screwed anyway....

Do your self a HUGE favor and throw that new cooler in the trash when you get it. Buy a new a Ford cooler or find a used oem one. Put the idea of using aftermarket parts on these trucks out of your head and it will save you problems in the future.

I appreciate the advice don’t get me wrong,
But I am going to cross my fingers and use it with the genuine Ford gaskets and O-rings.

Very good reviews on this part
For whatever that’s worth

Anyone know how this regulator drops down into the hole?

Everything fell out at once when I took it apart.

Place the long one down on a table with the end with the holes in it towards the bottom. Then the shorter one goes inside the long one with the flange on towards the top. Then the spring drops in. Now this assembly goes into the round hole in the header, spring first. Cheers!

Well the bad news is,
I found a crack in the rear housing.

So I called a friend of mine that has a shop and he said yes I have a few of those.
So I ended up getting a complete (used) cooler with both housings for $100

Cooler was in good shape and the Rear housing had the clips to hold the valves in.
Which was a plus.

I cleaned everything up and gave the cooler a paint job
Put my new genuine Ford gaskets and O-rings in.
And installed everything this morning.

Took it around the block/so far so good no leaks/looks good.

I also got my Amazon cooler in the mail today which I will be returning tomorrow.

But I must say that it looks pretty nice and is pretty much identical to the Ford part as far as I could tell
Using my cheap digital calipers it seems to be the same measurements.

The gaskets also look like genuine Ford gaskets but that’s hard to prove.

I ended up with an extra front housing so if anyone needs one let me know before it ends up in the recycling bin.

Glad you noticed the crack and were able to find a newer updated one! Cheers!

I ended up using a ratchet strap to put it all together and installing as 1 unit.

not saying it's impossible, But I had a HELL of a time getting the housings on....
well greased up o-rings and super clean housings.... It just wasn't going...

and I'm no weakling...

anyway, Job Done. :pint:
