I got a new exhaust, I have the used catalytic converter. I was going to sell it, but friend told me it was a federal law I couldn't.
2006 power stroke cat
Recyclers only offer $30.
What gives? Is that true? Illegal?

My advice would be keep it. With the way the regulations are changing, if you ever needed it to throw on to pass an inspection, you'll be sorry you don't have it. I saw a used one sell on ebay for over $500 a couple years ago. To buy a new cat from Ford you're looking at like $1600. Just keep the thing, just in case.

From what I've read, it is illegal to sell a used cat with the intent of using it on another vehicle but it is legal to sell them to anyone for scrap.

What he said. When I bought my 6.0 there were no smog regulations for diesels in CA. Since then things have changed and they now have to get a smog check every 2 years. I wish I would have kept my cat.

Keep it. It would be cheaper in the long run. Besides you can do "internal visual inspection" to make sure it's not clogged.

**hint hint** "The internet says to remove it and let it sit inlet end up for 30 days. The soot measured at the top greater than 3" means it's clogged. Once it's all at the top you just dump it out." :poke::poke:

How the hell to Arizona end up besting smog-Nazi California? We have to test EVERY year!

You could also cut the welds off of the cat that hold the two outer pipes in, remove the pipes, widen the hole slightly, gut it and slide your straight pipe right on through then weld it back on! Always passes a visual and noone is any wiser!

Or just buy the bolt in delete pipe that way you can actually put a real working cat on it if you need to and just swap back and forth with a couple ratchets.

I don't know about once you change injectors/turbo and such bit I passed my emissions testing with no cat or egr and they do particulate testing. Just went to stock tune and golden! I chose this way cause its easiest for me and passes any testing

That wouldn't pass here, they do a visual test too.

Here in Texas they don't check deisel emissions. I just got mine inspected. He DID pop the hood, looked around.(was probably checking my washer fluid level ) slammed the hood, put a sticker on it and I was gone in 10 min.

See my post below, I modified it to pass visual inspections, with zero performance impact! Also if you wanted to keep your cat and have a true 4" turbo back you can do this ( minus gutting) and fit 4" pipes on either side

You need to have some regular interval inspection or something? We are getting rid of our emissions testing in a few months ( of course I had to still pay for mine last week...) But some are saying we may go to yearly inspections

Yeah, I know how that works. Mine was gutted before I got rid of it, just used it as a resonator though.

I've never gotten my truck inspected anywhere but my old shop, they'll pass anything I bring em, but there is an ungodly number of straight piped trucks in texas. I'd say unless you're a coal roller, you won't really catch any hell from cops anyhow. ****, with my 2002, I had headers, 38r, 4" dp, with 5" pipe and a long ass 7" tip exiting before the rear wheel, and would drive by/along side cops often with no problems, and that was honestly the loudest, best sounding 7.3 I've heard if I may say so myself lol
