Is Rotella really bad on a 7.3?

Yes, but I wouldn't be surprised.... Been around since 1951, but only started marketing 3 years ago. Fricken old school word of mouth only gets you so far...

Pretty sure you can't have feelings to be a salesman....

Just a general statement, not trying to poke your soft spot, lol. After all, the name of the threadLOL

My truck runs like dogchit on rotella switched back to it recently with the very cold temps we've been having and it confirms the truck runs like chit on it. Runs much better on delo 15-40 from Walmart. Can only imagine it'll be running a lot better once it's back on the delo and the new HPOP.

My '00 has had Rotella 15-40 every 5K miles for about the past 200K for sure. I don't see any issue with it, the truck burns a slight bit and leaks and ever so slight bit but combined still not enough to have to add between oil changes. I would think not bad for a 15 year old truck with 312K.

Based on the testimony above, it looks like it may be a real shear stable oil for the HEUI system. Would love to run some and perform some UOA's on it to compare to the regular Rotella I use. I bet it has a higher proportion of PAO in it compared to the other synthetic offerings.

*Edit*
Can't tell if it is a synthetic or synthetic blend but it does say it has shear stable VII's in it. This is one of the things in say Rotella T6 that makes it more susceptible to shearing (group III base stocks with high amounts of shear susceptible VII's) vs something that has a larger proportion of POA's. But you gonna pay for dem POA's. LOL Then again, maybe they have reformulated T6 to address this.

I will be sending oil samples in of used 5-40 delo and switching to LE 5w-40 soon. I don't own a 7.3 but any oil that's good in a 6.0 should be plenty good for a 7.3.

Jim, do you guys use star polymers in any of your products? I would think that they would be an excellent VII with regard to shear stability based on their shape relative to linear chain VII's.

Good stuff. Can't wait to see the results. I've heard that spool valve in the injectors is hard on the oil. To bad you don't have any data on dino Rotella and T6 to throw in there too.

After talking with Jim, were thinking of maybe doing a filter change at 7000 and oil and filter at 14000 and depending on samples may do filters at 7000 and 14000 and oil and filter at 21000 miles. It'll take me a lil while to get those miles on my work truck but I'll be reporting back on what the samples say.

Rotella is great.I do oil analysis fairly regular. All I ever use is rotella.
81 Chevy luv,780k miles- 10w30(sold)
06 fully built subaru sti (430whp)-5w40,
01 toyota tacoma 3.4 supercharged -5w40(sold)
04 jeep GC 4.7ho-5w40
08 bmw 335i (430whp)-5w40(sold)
14 subaru outback -5W40(sold)
00 ford f250 diesel-15w40
75 mercedes Benz 450sl-5w40
03 excursion diesel-5w40(dads)
03 ford f350-5w40(dads)
10 dodge cummins,fully deleted-5w40(dads)
11 dodge cummins,stock-5w40(dads)
97 ford f250 diesel-15w40 (dads)

To date all the vehicles have performed perfectly. Great oil analysis has always provided me with info to stretch my oil changes. Starting at the 3-4k and going up to 7500 depending on vehicle

I'd saw your fine
Plus sam's club has good prices. 6 gallons for $71 of 15-40
$110 for 6 gallons of 5w40

I swear this has got to be related to shear. They must be using a lot of shear susceptible VII's. Picture a linear chain that is coiled up on it's self and once the temperature is increased they uncoil. These uncoiled long chains are very susceptible to shearing especially (I suspect) in the HEUI system and 6.0 spool valve. What do you run?

cheveron delo is the only dino oil that my truck stays consistent running up to 5k miles.. valvoline and amsoil are a close tie for second.
