try not to take the things you may know about how a gas engine performs and apply them to a diesel. I.E. exhaust backpressure post turbo.

Agreed. But I was refering to a non turbo gas engine. Considering majority of gas engines produced are N/A, just like the majority of diesel engines produced are turbocharged.
