6.4 prollums...id like to lie and tell you it'll be fine after you get this all repaired.

To leave stock and count on for daily driving you have to be a tad twisted to choose a 6.4. They're as bad as the 6l is alleged to be.

Well once this is finally straightened out the only place I'm taking it is the dealer to trade in.
Does anyone know if having the *** removed and the tune returned to stock could be the issue? I returned it to stock before I dropped it off.

why did you return it to stock? there will be a host of codes and it wont run without being tuned. Likely that is distracting them from identifying the actual issue.

I changed the tune back to stock after it broke down and wouldn't start just to see if it made a difference. Then it was towed to the dealer. Do the techs not have tools to tell them if the truck has had a different tune?

I would bet they can gigure it out. With a stock tune and no emissions it likely is throwing codes and not going to be drivable though

Most dealerships and/or techs won't have a clue about *** off or things related to the tuning for it.

Why not talk to the guy turning the wrench. Give him the tuner make his life simple.

I would be legally they arnt suppost to let it leave with out the emissions stuff. They might try to sell you the emissions parts too if thats what it takes to get it running with out the tuner

At this point if I went in and asked to put my tune back on would they most likely call the warranty place so I would have to pay for the whole bill?

My bet. They want to get paid. They are going to do what needs to happen for that. Id talk with them. Its not like you dealing with ford. This is a 3 party deal. You, the dealer, and the warranty company. I would bet the dealer dosent give a crap about the tuning as long as they get paid. If it was ford they its a different story. Now if the warranty company flakes they will try to collect from you though. Again i doubt they care about tuning outside of warranty and not on fords dime

Remember they are accountable to ford. And ford has the people to figure out the tuner or not tuner bs. The warranty people are likely clueless

When it rains it pours. Had them replace 2 hanging injectors and to no surprise when the hpfp went out it pumped metal all through the fuel system and my aftermarket warranty doesn't cover fuel system parts.

It was a given with a failed HPFP. The dumb part here is the dealer band aiding it back together without addressing it.

I'm just going to have it towed to my place once it's back together. They said it would've been about $6k to replace the other 6 injectors, some cooler and the fuel rails plus I got the feeling this dealer wasn't too familiar with diesels. Should I replace the fuel system myself or is the whole engine pointless?

If you are able to do the work yourself do it. The engine will be fine. Just replace anything that fuel touches pretty much. Drop the tank and clean it out. Replace high and low pumps. Fuel rails and injectors. Fuel cooler. Clean out the secondary filter housing and all the low pressure lines.

How much am I looking at in parts after the hpfp and 2 injectors were already changed? For the rest of the injectors do I have to use the same ones?

Unless you have an aftermarket fuel system that routes all returns back to tank you will need to replace everything.

I have a question to the masses.... If these things are notorious for hpfp's contaminating the entire fuel system when they go bad and then you have to replace the entire fuel system, then does someone actually sell an aftermarket system that filters the fuel after the hpfp and BEFORE it enters the heads?

Seems to me that would solve the "entire fuel system is contaminated" situation". Then you're only replacing the pump when it goes bad and a filter, not everything.

You'd think that with all of the folks running higher horsepower setups in the 6.4, there'd be something out there? Maybe there is and I haven't noticed. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
