Not sure what year but it's an auto, I assume 4r100. He says it is leaking from the front of the trans out the dust cover. What could it be? He said about 2qts a week so it's a substantial leak.

My 4r100 was dumping out the dust cover when I bought it. Mine was leaking from the pump seal. Pulled transmission. Put a new seal in and a aftermarket TC and I have been very pleased. Really was not a big deal.

Incase it helps.
My seal was from racer x USA (very nice and helpful)
TC was the heavy duty lower stall billet from precision new Hampton (also very nice and helpful)
So far I have been a very happy customer.

He is sure it is trans fluid, and not motor oil or fuel? Anything that leaks on the top of the engine will also end up going through that dust cover.

I'm pretty sure it's not oil and it's not fuel. I will make sure he knows I is trans fluid. Though I assume if he has been adding 2qts a week that's what it is.

Are there any diagrams or instructions online that he can look at? Or maybe it would be best for him to buy a manual?

Never pulled a transmission before I pulled that one. Really the worst part for me was doing it in gravel and undesirable weather. I did a lot of Internet research bookmarking good sources. Talked to tech support on both products to get their input on install and pointers. Felt silly after finishing because mentally I made a mountain out of a mole hill but I learned a lot and enjoyed it. Make sure to check the pump bushing, and if reusing the TC make sure it does not have a seal groove. Great time to upgrade TC if you want to be optimistic.

Personally it seems they are always vague when I need detail, and then super detailed in the simple areas. This is the first light truck that I just saved the money on the Haynes/chilton and switched to Internet. Might be a great manual but I think they got the info for it from the experts on this site.

I'm just looking for some more info that I can pass on to my friend to help him out. I think he wants to do it soon and I don't think I will be around to help.

Front seal in mine was leaking a bit when it finally went out. Brian at BTS said it
was from getting it hot. I had it hot several times towing my TT in Texas heat, BTS
trans and 6.0 cooler fixed that.

Get s good transmission jack and a couple feet of extension with a swivel. Ease transmission and engine back together. It should all drop into place. Don't pull them together with bolts or you could do serious damage. Chock wheels good.

Here is a rough outline. Sorry if I'm missing something, it has been awhile. I know there are some shields and this and that's I missed.

Pull drive shafts out of way, unhook electrical, unbolt cross member and use jack to lift t case/tranny/engine to aid in removal of cross member. Yank out t case.

Was roomy under the truck after you started tossing parts in bed

I worked flywheel in gear teeth to unbolt the TC. Unhooked fluid cooler lines and electrical. Made notes and scores of how shift cable attached. Unbolted from engine and slid back.

Here is a big NO. Do not rig it on the jack like I did. DUMB! Once the wood got drenched in fluid they would shoot out like soap if you looked at it wrong. The pan really sucks and the jack was a bare flat plate. It ended up doing a rollover trick off the jack but in slow motion and luckily didn't hurt anything. What more can I saw I f*cked up. Anyway notice towels plastic and tape. Keep exposed internals covered and clean! Tape off lines, vents, dipstick tube also

If you stay organized staging your parts and hardware this really is a breeze. Everything will be drenched in ATF. Toss a few quarts in new TC if you get one. Putting back together is just reverse order. Once done I pulled transmission pan and changed filter.

Rent a transmission jack. It makes it simple. While you have the transmission out, change the up pipe donuts. It is a ten minute job with the trans out. Over two hours and a lot of cussing with the trans in.

Many times ive seen a fuel leak, pedistal o ring leak, or some other oil leak on top of motor, and like stated, it goes through a hole on the bellhousing. Tell your friend to pull that flex plate cover, start truck, and inspect. Also have him check valley of motor for leaks, if anything is dirty, which if you dont wash a 7.3 regularly, they get dirty

If he has been going through two quarts of transmission fluid a week, I think you can pretty much rule out leaks from the valley.

I guess I didnt see where he actually specified it was trans fluid, but yes if its losing 2 quarts, I would guess trans fluid, if it was motor oil, the truck would not start after it leaked enough oil, if what he is leaking was not being replaced

do not forget to check the engine side of the converter for cracks! it is common if overheated at low speeds due to converter slippage to crack the coverter.
