When your choosing/ running a setup what's a back pressure your looking to stay at?
We all know 1:1 ratio is the best, but what is to much?

I know with twin setups people can see 60+
What about us single turbo or even Vgt guys.

2 to 1 is way too high. (40 boost to 80 drive)
1.4:1 is about the highest you really wanna go for backpressure. (40 boost to 56 drive)

If you have gauges for drive pressure and boost, you can set everything up really close, really fast.

The best turbo I had so far is the 64/71/.70 from Trusted Performance. Yeah, yeah....whatever.
That thing had a 1:1 ratio for boost to drive till about 35-38psi...then the drive pressure started to climb...but not to the point of having to gate it.

Wish I would have kept that turbo and used it for my twin setup instead of using a 66/71/.80. That thing was a slug, even with the BD Diverter valve.

I bought a 66mm 6 blade billet wheel for it, but chunked the engine before I even picked it up to try it.
Changes I would have made: install the billet 66mm wheel, and change the .80 to the .70 housing, and ditch the "Boost" actuated actuator for a "Drive Pressure" style actuator...
Set the actuator to open up at 35-40 psi, and let it rip!

Really Ivan??

I have been debating selling the 64 for a 68 or 72mm for my small charger. (dont really care about dding it anymore).

Why?

Are you saying that cuz it's too small, laggy, or your moving up?

Either way...are you not happy with it?

Ivan nailed it on the head, a single charger setup traditionaly runs a bit higher back pressure than a twins setup

but is there a set pressure when too much needs to be regulated. not saying ratio but talking psi.

My knowledge on wastegated is very shallow and I love an opportunity to learn. I see these companies making 60mm wastegates and what not but the springs total up to like 20 psi. Guys like Aaron running stuff like that. Where do they get the springs to go higher ?

Any time your regulating back pressure down boost is going to go down too. There are points in turbo sizing where the turbine begins to be choked and starts to build more pressure than boost.

Big singles tend to make a good ratio but are Laggy smaller quicker spooling set ups tend to have higher drive then boost to a degree. Compounds get the best of both worlds because after the turbine in the small turbo gets chokes you can feed that wasted exhaust energy to a big turbo and use that energy to make more boost.

And to the guy wanting to upside the small turbo ...why? Pretty much guarantee you wont make any more power. Just be harder to light... not worth it

same turbo i have and the exact same thing i've seen. When i dyno'd a little while back....i saw boost almost to 45psi and back pressure around 53-54psi. It's been a darn good turbo so far being non gated. Just wish TP gave us a better pedistal and drain for it. But that can be changed i guess.

When I had my waste gate I was running boost reference to the top and bottom so I could control when it opened and shut

Hmm. Could you also have a 20psi spring, and then run the boost source to the top with an inline controller. Ex. Let 10psi on the top therefore 30 psi would be needed for the gate to open?

If you still had that Turbo from T.P. what would the other Turbo be on that set up for twins. That is the Turbo I am running and I am looking at going to twins just for egt 's.
