So... Good ones and bad ones. Post up your experience.

I want know what I need to buy for my truck. Its a 2002 7.3. I bought a starter from Oreilly's (I know, be easy) with a lifetime warranty, for about $200. First one lasted 6 months. It literally broke in half. So I take it back, get another, and literally 3 days later, it won't engage. And if it does, it won't for more than about a 1/2 second. Its really pissing me off, and I don't want this happen one night when Im taking a girl on a date, or if Im off somewhere.

So what is the best quality starter out there? Price is somewhat an issue, but I will pay more for a higher quality product.

And I was just joking about the taking a girl out part. That'll never actually happen. But still.

02s came from factory w 2 bolt starters. They are junk. If your are putting 2 bolts back on that is the problem. Get one for a 94-01 or a 3 bolt one. Should have better luck.

The starter on mine died (only one slow to turn over warning while at the gas station a few minutes earlier...thought it was a fluke) in the Burger King parking lot 60 miles from home and my spare vehicle. I looked around and Advanced Auto was within walking distance. Bought a 3 bolt starter without realizing it. Threw it on, wouldn't engage. Took it back, had it tested. Worked perfectly. Showed them the dead starter, they realized that I had a 2 bolt, swapped it and sent me on my way.

Does a 3 bolt not work on a motor set up for 2 bolt?

Edit, the new Advanced spins the motor over faster than that dead starter ever did.

Pony up cupcake and buy a starter worth a crap so you don't get stranded when you do take out a fine feminine friend, or don't and do. That might work to your advantage too LOL

Napa starters have been good to me. The solenoids are craps. I've melted 3-4 of them. A good electrical shop will het you a good solenoid for about 50$

sent while looking at a hole in my block

Guess I got lucky with mine. Stock starter went out somewhere a bit north of 135k miles. Replaced it with an O'Reilly starter and been running that same starter ever since. I think we are almost 5 years in and a little over 100k miles on it. When I put it on I couldn't believe how fast it cranked compared to the original one. I either need to go buy a lottery ticket or you guys are rough on starters. Lol. Good luck with the search. It seems hard to find starters/alternators that are built like they used to be.

Do you have a local mom/pop auto electric shop? We have one and he is often 1/2 the price of box store with twice the service and quality.

I actually called a local guy today. He does all the stuff on our farm. I will be getting one from him monday morning. Hopefully that will fix my problems.

Hes saying a Nippendenso is the way to go.

Guess I have been lucky with O'Reilly's starters also. Right after I got my truck the starter died at a restaurant right next to O'Reilly's. That one lasted about 120K miles. Replaced it, and the current one has been going for about 15K miles so far.

Partly luck and partly what the guy sells you that day. Oreilly sells about four different rebuilds. Two have lifetime replacement, two are limited.

I have been doing some reading and mitsubish, nippon-denso, and remy seem to have the.best reputations. Mitsu and one nippon-denso offer gear reduction for faster starts.

Anybody have any input on mean green, bd, or dc power starters?

Half of me thinks they are a waste, the three upscale brands, while the other half thinks the 7.3 could.benefit.fromna.snappy powerful starter. Ever turned one of these babys by hand? Its work, no doubt.

As a side thought while we discuss electrical issues, ford discontinued the positive/starter cables for dual alternator trucks. Im unsure of how it really differs from the singles as mine didnt physically tie into the battery cables. However, recalling the 260 dollars they wanted in 2010 for a set I wasnt interested in checking the "single alternator" part number. I took my old.cables to.the john deere dealer to source parts. It was a pleasant surprise.honestly as the parts.guy was a electrical nerd. He discussed terminal.composition and resistance of different types of cable and connections. We settled on 2/0(even though ford has a 3/0 from battery #2 to the starter) premium cable, cast copper terminals "tinned" with cadmium. All connections were hydraulically crimped and the sealed with heavy frikkin duty shrinkwrap that has glue in it. The wire sheathing and terminals are sealed together! If anybody wants any battery cable.porn pics let me know, cuz Im eager to.show.them off, lol! Oh, and 89$ incl.tax!
