Good looking R you have. Nice that you were able to work with your grandfather on the project.

I know it sounds crude but a coffee can with gas in it and a stiff brush has always worked well for me.

We actually took ours to a local Truck shop that had a bay with a steam powerwasher, they were kind enough to let us use it after hours, took grease, paint, everything off.

This is a great idea to fix up the tractor for a memorial. But....i'm not trying to be the correct police, or a debby downer, or a negative nancy when i say this. Changing points, beating out dents and repainting is not considered a restoration. A true restore is much more indepth than that. Anyway......

I love the old allis's. I have a D17 ser 1 and a 175, both have the 4cyl gasser. The d17 needed the engine rebuilt in it when i got it. The 175 needed the carb cleaned and a few other things addressed, but the engine if fairly solid. I mainly use them to maintian 2 different pieces of land i hunt. Numerous parts are still available for the old allis's. I get a lot of info from allischalmersdotcom, become a member on the discussion forum and there is a lot knowledgeable people over there. Make sure you use good paint and PO1 color, not PO2 if your trying to be original.

Well getting ready to tackle this project this winter finally since I am moving down. An what do you know the old D17 is having problems starting. Someone left the fuel on so I imagine Ill be checking the float in the carb as soon as I get down there to get it up and running again. Anyone else getting ready to start up a project like this

I want to get into a project like this when my girls get older. I like the older x600 Fords. Not as old as what you guys are restoring but it's what I'm familiar with. A Roadless model Ford would be a cool project too, but good luck finding one in the states.

Update on project... Getting no starts and turns over thottles up and dies since it sat for a while... Since I just got moved into the house next to where I was storing the tractor. I have done some work to it mainly replacing distributor wires, spark plugs, Battery cables,Battery and tested the generator..... to make sure its putting out power at crank..... Narrowed it down to fuel side now so going throw all the fuel bowl, Carb, and then points.....My goal is to have her running and possibly painted by Labor day. If not painted all the parts that my grandpa had broken off replaced or damaged replaced.....

Hello my name is Jason and I have a tractor problem. LOL

Sold this one a few years ago:

I currently have a John Deere 630LP Standard - 1 of 16 built that is stripped down being gone through slowly and restored back to better than new.

With a Depression Era John Deere D in line after that.

And then one of John Deere's original 720/730 Diesel cutaway display tractors (about one of a dozen built and currently only 2 are known to the collecting world). It currently looks something like this:

And will look closer to this (except better) when finished:

Good god man! Where are you finding these one-offs?
I'm looking for a diesel r worth restoring, know of any? Doesn't need to be anything super rare, either.

LOL

I've been around antique tractors for over 25 years - I know people - and I just keep looking because you never know what you might find - arm yourself with information and just go at it. Look at everything even if you think it is nothing - and I do mean LOOK at it - just the other day I was talking to a guy that found a 730 high crop that had all the high crop equipment removed and it was being used as a row crop..... but it still had the good high crop tag - he bought it and a junk high crop missing a tag and now has a complete tractor for a fraction of what a good legit tractor would cost.

I can't say that I know where there is an R for sale - but I bet I could have a list of a dozen of them by the morning if I looked. It all depends on your location, what you are looking for, and what your budget is.

A small part of the collection that I sold a few years ago:

I've been around them about the same time, lol. Just haven't made time to actually look.
Now I've got a 6 yr old, he likes the old tractors. Gonna get away from the cars a little, and work with him on some old iron. If he likes that, maybe move to something a little snotty as he gets older.

The r's I've run across seem to be at a premium, even for the basket cases.

Old iron is good for young boys. ;)

I don't know what you call a premium, but I have seen them sell for as little as $1200 and as much as $20K - with most of them falling in the 4-5K territory - it just all depends on what it is and what condition it is in - especially the pony motor of all things. Those pony motors are quite expensive to overhaul.... you'll have more in that then you will in the big engine....
